Hi all,
I have a quick brain teaser here if anybody can assist.
I have been looking on ebay at a replacement front grill for my 1998, P38 2.5DSE. I have looked on my grill and I can see 4 Phillips screws securing the top part to the bonnet slam panel and a further 2 screws one on the left and one on the right at the front lower part of the grill.
There are two I have been looking at on flea Bay which are custom silver supercharged grills but one states will fit all P38 which have the standard 4 screws securing them?? and the other one on fle Bay states will act as an excact replacement with 6 securing screws.
Confused .com I am. I have checked mine and I have 4 screws at the top on the bonnet slam panel and two at the front.
I contacted the ebay seller who has the grills with the 4 securing screws i have the url here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320707941406&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT and he states all P38 RR have only 4 screws securing them is this correct as I have six???????
Here is also the url for the six screw one, Range Rover Sports Grille 1994 - 2001- P38 Sport Grill on eBay (end time 15-Jul-11 09:28:24 BST)

The original standard grille has, as you say, 4 large screws into the slam panel and one screw either side at the bottom.
The first grill shown is a different type in somuch as the slats are open and there is no provision to fit the lower screws. If you have previously removed your existing grille, you will know that the bottom edge has to be "Hooked in" first before fitting the screws. I believe this new grille is relying on the bottom edge and upper slam panel screws to hold it in place.
The second grille however appears to have the provision for all upper and lower screws but of course the slat design is different.
I think the first type would be secure but without actually seeing one fitted, I could not put money on it being 100%

Thanks Irishrover, I was confused as the guy said all P38's only had 4 screws. I thought I had an odd Range Rover.
Not sure if you can comment but do you think these are value for money??

:behindsofa:

Value for money is the buyers interpretation of how much they like/want the item and how much cash they have !!
I think Clarkie's offer is fair, but at the end of the day it's your choice which way you want to go.

On a personal basis, it's well known on here that I prefer to keep the original features of the P38 and see no point in "Blinging" them up to be the L322 model lookalike.
At the end of the day, it's down to personal choice and "One Man's Meat is another Man's Poison !"

As has been mentioned, it's a personal choice thing. The two you have highlighted are, in fact, the standard p38 grille, with some tweaking. The first has a couple of rows of bars removed, then holes drilled into it, then (presumeably) painted silver. The second a similar has occurred, but without removing the bars.

I went along a slightly different route - I did a bit of a restoration job on all my black trim, the bumpers, grille etc and they look ace now. (have a look at my other posts...) I also invested in a new front grille from an ebay seller...

RANGE ROVER P38 SUPERCHARGED SPORTS GRILL (STYLE 5) | eBay UK

A little bit more expensive, but his grille was exactly what I was after and in the appropriate colour (oxford blue) so it matched with the rest of the bodywork. As he suggests, it is a doddle - 5 minutes with a screwdriver and fitted it easily, with a little bit of jiggery pokery to make sure it was all neatly aligned. If you do go for one of these, don't bother with the tiewraps bit, I found it didn't lend itself to a neat fit. The car now looks fantastic, plus I still have the original grille when it comes to resale time or I fancy a change again!

Having had a closer look, the second grille you suggest is a different colour to the bit of trim under the headlight - it might look a bit odd as it runs up against it...

I've a P38 2.5DSE (99) and my grill has 4 on the top and two, one at each lower corner. Now I have an extra 2 (each top corner) due to just added headlamp guards.

Thanks all, it's been confirmed I don't have an odd Range Rover, the seller on flea bay got it wrong, all P38's have 4 screws on the top and 2 at the front.
