hi / looking for some help/info
I got a p38 4.0 petrol range rover from e bay with no engine
it was taken out for a kit car by last owner.
I have a recon v8 3.9 out of my r rover classic which now runs 2.8 Isuzu diesel.
can I fit this in to the p38 it looks like it will fit mechanically but was worried
about the becm. if I use alternator etc. will it work ?
any body done this? thanks

3.9 does have an ECU...I think it is the 14CUX Lucas jobby....

Whilst if the original Engine ECU is in place, the BeCM will register this and be 'OK' but the BeCM needs a 'engine running' signal to perform other functions etc....also the EAS needs an Engine running signal from somewhere!

thanks. my 3.9 v8 does have a cux 14 ecu but it has been [ jerry rigged] to run stand alone .
before I got it. they said they did it from a you tube video and it does run ok.
will the becm be fooled if I connect ancillary's from p38 on to the 3.9.
the eas . has been already nobbled before I got it with separate valves pumped at normal level.
it has some kind of harness fitted to fool the computer. paddy

Which ancillaries?

What age is the 4.0? The GEMS engines were a lot more keyed in to the air-con etc. The diesel and THOR from later models were more of a cut and shut job from BMW (so easier).

If you look on RangeRovers.net there is a thread from a guy slipping a 6.2 GMC engine in there (LS1, I think) so it is possible. Just need to check how he fooled the BECM.

hi my 4.0 p38 is 1998 I thought if I connect p38 alternator oil temp etc. it will think it still has gems engine
as 3.9 has own ecu stand alone set up . just to connect these to p38 keep it quiet?
just a thought will gear box work as still original ?
thanks paddy

Gearbox ECU talks to the Engine ECU to demand a torque reduction while the shift happens.....

thanks for all reply's
looks like I will look out for a p38 gems 4.0 engine . sounds like to much hassle
to fit the 3.9 . it s not to straight forward as thought.it might be .never mind I can keep the 3.9 in case my other classic v 8 3.9 decides to go out with a bang.
thanks again for help/reply's
