won't start on a morning, but once started runs and pulls as it should. Can be turned off for hours and will start again no problem, but; First thing on a morning I can crank it for 10 mins or more, it's getting fuel, and heat. Sometimes it sounds like the starter is going back in, today same problem, eventually started by turning ignition on and off for heater light to ensure enough heat in plugs. Several turns on the starter and it coughed and fired, clouds of black smoke, then runs sweet. Took it to a local garage and left it with them for a couple of days, guess what, it started every time first time. It's had a new pump, plugs and battery.

Help, it's driving me crazy!

Exactly the same as mine.
I was advised to change leak off pipes which I did but didn't help mine (although usual cure I've been told)
It's gone to my local LR garage for a look as I don't have time at the moment to look into it but I'll let you know what the problem was with mine when I get it back.

Thanks, sorry you have the same problem, but glad i'm not alone.

Just been told a likely cause is an earth lead corroding "Somewhere", causing loss of amps to the starter so although it turns, it's not enough Umph!

I love it when they can be specific and use all the technical jargon! Ian.

ian just try put heave wire from neg on bat to good earth point on body if no diff try fresh earth on starter you did not say it was turning over badly

Just heard from garage and my issue may be due to leaking no. 4 injector as they think air is still getting in, hence the poor start.

Going to get it replaced in a couple of weeks and see what happens.

No it's not turning over badly, but when I first put the new battery on the other day, it fired straight away. But the next morning same old story.

I will try that, thanks.

Sounds like it could be. I will have mine checked. thanks. Ian

Heater plugs?

Hi. I doubt I`ve got the magic answer, but, coupla thoughts: sounds at first like fuel running back, but if lots of black smoke sounds like OVER fueling ! Was it a garage you know and trust who had no trouble starting it? Not some-one couldn`t find the fault & wants to pass it on? Sorry but I got a nasty suspicious streak.
Had starting troubles on mine because of fuel running back, and after replacing fuel spill pipes etc cured it by fitting an in-line non-return valve before the filter. Maybe masking a worn pump or other fault, but been good for 3 yrs now.
Might save a lot of aggro to get it plugged in to test-book. I know it`s against the ethos of this site but if there`s a faulty temp sensor or similar it may be cheaper & quicker to find out that way, rather than replace suspect components? If a dealer diagnoses the problem doesn`t mean you gotta pay them to do repairs with factory priced components.

Quick question? The black smoke is only on start-up? and then clears up? No black smoke on acceleration? Just thinking about blocked air filters/intakes.
