I am told that the p38 (and probably everything else) will display an air bag fault after 10 years from manufacture. it seams that air bags (not the suspension airbags) have a best before date or at least the ecu controller has.
Is that correct? :eek:
Is it an mot failure?
If it is, what must be done (sounds stupid I know):doh:
Replace drivers airbag?
Replace passinger airbag?
Replace side airbags?
How many are there?
Replace ecu, controllers?
Now sounding expensive but not as expensive as a crash with nout happening.
Wot sort of money are we talkin?
Ignore it, will it go away

So, regardless of if the p38 throes up a fault or not they need replacing?

If you take a side airbag out, it has a label which states service life is 10 years and a date. I know this because one of the b#***#rds went pop on mine when I gently side swiped an earth bank. It destroyed the drivers seat back and offered F all protection as most of it went out the back of the seat. I won't be replacing it and I have unplugged the one in the passenger seat. Just got to work out how to fool the SRS DCU and re-set the "Airbag Fault" message now.
 
The SRS (Airbag) ECU nor the Becm will trigger a message indicationg that the bags are out of date or illuminate the warning lamp for the same reason.
Although the service schedule states that they should be replaced after 10 years, how many people have done so???
I would think that the cost of replacement, especially for those models with additional bags would be higher than the value of the car.
The most common cause of the airbag fault light being lit is I have found, due to the battery either going completely flat or being disconnected for a few weeks or longer. A simple reset puts it out again.

If you do work out how to fool the SRS DCU and re-set the "Airbag Fault" message then I would love to know how you did it.
I am looking at a late 2000 rangie and got to thinkin that the dam warning lights will come on in a couple of months.

Do you mean it will or it will not trigger a message aftert 10 years.
I was looking at a 96 rangie and it had drivers airbag warning. I think that was what it said (was a couple of weeks ago)
Seller said every rangie over 10 years had same warning because bags out of date. Is this right or wrong?
Got me thinkin, Googled drivers airbag cost, got £500 or more
Could be 6 or 7 airbags in a car
Thats like 3 or 4 gran and thats + fitting:eek:

Wot's the situtation if you buy a rangie thats over 10 years old (described as no known faults) from a dealer, if LR service schedule states that they should be replaced after 10 years?

There are 4 airbags in post 2000 (99MY on) P38's. Driver, front passenger and side bags in both front seats. Pre 2000 just 2.
The usual reason for the airbag message is a bad electrical connection either to the side airbags, the connectors under the seats, or the airbag in the steering wheel caused by the flexible connector behind the wheel.:eek:
 
The airbag light will NOT come on simply because the airbags as past their date. The becm may be able to do many things but it can't read a date label.

Still a g or 2 that few are willing (or have) to spend. Its 1 of those voluntary spends when there are enough compulsory spends just to keep it moving.

Total c$%^ wot he told me then!!!
I did not expect it to read a date label :doh: but it would not have surprised me to learn that the becm would know when it was made & wot the current date is. It would therefore know when the airbags were needing serviced. Actually I am more surprised that it does not, my van tells me when to change the oil even if it aint been driven a single mile and it cant read the label on the oil can. Well I don't think it can.

So anyway I saw this sticky
buying a crock of ****!!!
And I got to wondering about all them 10+ old rangies
Sure a dealer would have to tell you about it or you could take it back.
I mean like thats a major safety device equivalent to finding out your seat belts might not work in a car you just bought.

Hey guys, my husband replaced the heater matrix o-rings and he started the range p38 (1995) without the clocks being attached to check if it was still leaking, and turned it off and then refitted the carpet and put the seats back in, and the airbag fault has been on since, we have asked 2 places to re-set the airbag light with no joy (not sure on what system they used) could it be due to the seat being taken out and it not connected properly or is it a deeper fault due to starting without clocks on?
help much appreciated thanks guys.
 
You will need a proper diagnosis to work out what caused the fault and get it reset. Doubtless you will find someone local but if you get really stuck consider booking a weekend in our holiday cottage and I'll sort it for you!

Some SRS faults will reset just by disconnecting the battery so give that a try, had trouble with my under seat connections in the past and battery off always reset it.
 
Question, how many of you have changed their Airbags (SRS) on their P38 since they owned it? (Beside of course after an accident)

Low battery voltage will sometimes trigger an SRS fault. If your car has side airbags in the seat, then check the underseat connectors, there is also a connector for the drivers airbag that might have been disturbed when the clocks were removed. Most likely you will need it on diagnostics to reset it, although if it's a connector it may clear when re-connected.

The side airbags are lifed at 10 years according to the lable, the driver and passenger front airbags at 15 years.
I removed my side airbags after one went off when I slid into a ditch on ice at low speed. It proved to be totally useless as it went into the rear passenger compartment, just filled the car with smoke and destroyed the seat:mad:

I own a 1995 P38... So I am due to change them, but does people do it?
