hi very grateful if anyone can help with some advice. drivers door handle on my 2000my range rover p38 wont open from the outside. (it works from inside the car). i have tried out a few suggestions on this site but to without any success. Have decided therefore to replace the plastic cam

inside the lock mechanism. and purchased land rover part STC3064 from rimmer bros for about a fiver (picture enclosed)...... I am having trouble getting the mechanism out of the door, i have removed the torx screw just inside the door and wiggled the door handle to expose the mechanism, but really i need the whole thing out to work on it... any advice welcome!

To do it you have to take the door card off and disconnect all the linkages. Remove the lock, then do your repair and put it all back in again. :D
Only 3 linkages.
  1. Door pull cable.
  2. Window sill latch push-pull link.
  3. Link between lock flag lever and latch.

dan, thank you for your message. i have the door card taken off. whereabouts are the linkages disconnected? i can see 2 of them attached to the mechanism, but they are really tight and there is no play in the unit to allow me to disconnect or unlock them..

Its a bit like those metal puzzles made out of twisted nails I am afraid.
They do come off, and yes, its a lot of "fun".
One of them comes of easily after you pop the little plastic retaining clip (don't break it or lose it).
The internal door pull is easy its just an S-shaped formed wire on the end of the cable that goes thru a hole.

Its a bit of fiddling and twisting and lots of harsh-language that's required. Many of us have been there (and back).
Take a few pictures of it all before you pull it all apart, to provide clues for the re-assembly.

I'm not sure if anyone ever did a how-to with pictures for the actual link disconnect/reconnect though.

Good Luck!

You do not need to remove the latch. With door card off remove the link to the door handle unlatch lever. This usually has a clip at the bottom latch end that needs to be twisted to one side to allow the link to be pulled out. Top can then be taken out. Then remove the link to the barrel lever, on your model possibly a metal clip on the barrel lever that the link needs to be gently levered out of. Or it may have the same clip at the bottom as the handle lever. Land rover use various parts from other vehicles on later models. You will have to decide which method is used. Don't force anything more than needed. With both links disconnected handle should pull out at barrel end and slide to left and out. Changing the cam can be a pain be careful you may have to carefully cut it from around rollpin to get pin out.

hi again, i have managed to get the lock mech off to change the plastic cam and kit, but it has been bodged before quite badly, hacked about, and the only option i think is to obtain a another handle and mechanism. i should be able to get one fairly locally (30 miles from me) (secondhand) but before i travel to get it i wanted to ask about the key/lock... obviously the key will be different , so i am thinking i need a handle with a key, but what about the ignition? does that need to be changed? it all starts to get more complicated. just to say, that i havent been using the remote key for a year or two (just using the key manually from the outside to lock/unlock the car), so i am not bothered about that operation - just need to get in and out of the car and lock it manually. thanks

No need to change the ignition key barrel, my project car has a different ignition key to the door key, I have a door barrel that matches the ignition key, but I have yet to work out how to fit it to the handle. For the moment I just have the door key attached to the fob with a ring in case of need.

Apologies if I've replied in the wrong way . However I've come across your chat having searched the net looking for a way of opening drivers door on p38 which won't open from inside or outside neither with the central locking . Seems like there no tension at all on the inside handle along with loose outer handle . How can the door be opened ..i was thinking possibly remove drivers seat to gain the door card off..but surely the fixing bolts are in the door edges ?

You can get the door handle & key, & you need to get the ignition barrel as well. You can just change the centre part of the barrel by turning key to position one & using a pin, pull the internal barrel out. This saves taking the whole ignition barrel out. Try & get the glove box lock as well.

When I use the ignition key in the outside door lock it opens all but the drivers door. So Iam pretty sure I don't need new ignition and barrels etc.its as if the locking mechs inside the door have failed ie come loose or cables are non operational

That is entirely possible. Driver's seat is 4 bolts but awkward with door shut. Never tried that!
