Ok as some of you know my p38 has lots of problems. Next one is when it's hot come to a junction and it cuts out and won't restart. But if I keep the revs up its ok. If it's on idle when hot put it in D then accelerate and it doesn't rev up for about 5secs then it begins to rev up and go once it's going its fine. Any ideas

Diagnostics may tell a tale, could be a few things. Hope it's not quantity servo. Check lift pump for function (see tech archive) check for air in clear line for a start.

No faults in diagnostic. No air bubbles. What's the quantity servo? I have just found the in lift pump in the tank isn't working. The tank is over half. But it starts when it's cold. Should it start if the pump in the tank doesn't work. I put a lift pump on it and powered it up tried starting it and still won't start. There's fuel just doesn't fire.

Aren't you the one with Snap-on? Don't rely on that to show faults up on EDC. The list of things it could be gets longer then. Sort the lift pump first of all, if the lift pump has an NRV and has been marginal but has now given up completely it maybe the injection pump can't suck fuel past the NRV. Check fuse 39 and relay 12. With ignition OFF. Put a live positive feed to pin 5 of relay 12 (the one that is counter in orientation to the other three). Pump should run if it doesn't it's knackered. I told you before you need some proper diag. Quantity servo is in injection pump and can give same symptoms. New injection pump if it's that but it should come up on diag if it is faulty.

Ok thanks. Yeah it's snap on. I put a live to the relay and nothing. I just done the cold water trick on fuel pump and it started. But why is I get no throttle when it's hot if I come to a standstill. I'll cut the boot floor and get the in tank pump done. But as starts when cold it looks like injection pump issues.

It's more than likely a lift pump issue, worn injection pump won't be helping. Do lift pump first and see what you get.

Ok will do. Also do you know if the the bmw tds engine has the samef fuel pump? I need to make sure the lift pump is getting power too. Could you point me in the right direction for the dimensions that I need to cut the boot floor thanks.

No can't sorry when i did mine a removed the tank and did the brake pipes at the same time. There was a guide in the Tech Archive but when the site changed it lost all it's photographs. Do a web search that may give you an insight as to where to cut. Don't know about the BMW TDS. Get the proper pump for the Range rover. DO NOT get a cheap one, VDO unit at least.

Will do. I don't suppose you know what sort of supply pressure there should be to the high pressure fuel pump.

Cannot remember to be honest. I had the tank out on the pavement so it was just there in front of me. Like I say, as long as there isn't much fuel in it then it isn't a bad job. Mine was full! Most of the time was spent trying to find containers to put the fuel in!

I'm going to cut an access hole. Is it located on the drivers side or passengers?

Look at the link John posted. Not hard to work out from that. But butchery in my opinion. If a jobs worth doing it's worth doing properly. :(:(
