hi new to the forum i have a p38 diesal 1996 it has had a running fault since i bought it which i knew of, eventually after not been able to source the fault myself i took it to get plugged in and was told the needle lift sensor injector was faulty got a new one and its exactly the same.
fault is eratic idle and when i drive about 45-50mph runs very eratic runs perfect below and above that speed.
i tried looking for similar faults on this forum but what i did notice is talk of the 4th injector on my engine its the 3rd if this had been fitted in the wrong place by the previous owner would this cause this problem or is it correct where its fitted in the 3rd cylinder.
have the hot start problem to but i have bought the fix for that but its the initial problem thats annoying me most any help much appreciated.

Think you may like to put the number four injector where it should be, in the number four cylinder see what you get.

thanks will probably do that so i take it it should be the 4th injector was hoping someone would say that it would make a differance if it was in the wrong place before i do that that sensor one was a pig to get out thanks for the reply.

Yes in the wrong place it will run ****e...

The Needle lift sensor in the No4 Injector is used as the start of injection timing sensor and it used in conjunction with the Crank Position Sensor to ensure the Injection Pump timing/modulation is set correctly...if it is in No3, the pump timing and running will be fecked!

1,5,3,6,2,4. Is the firing order. Needle sensor fits in the last cylinder to fire. You need a window socket to do the job properly.

And obviously, the cylinders are numbered 1 at the fan end to 6 at the gearbox end!

thanks for all the replys guys looks like this is the problem probably been nowt wrong with original injector,i had bought the correct socket to remove it looks like someones had them all out before i got it and couldnt remember where the sensor socket went 3 0r 4 job for the weekend i think it actually runs fine apart from between 45-50 you just cant hold it at that speed will let you know how i get on.

When you have the cylinder issue corrected, be a bit careful about this reading. There was a bug in one of the major diagnostic provider's software. This has been corrected very recently. 3753.75 is a false reading.

G~

hopefully it was picking up on that injector because it wasnt even there or where it should be,i got the motor cheap enough and new of most of the faults so that gave me a bit of leaway in getting it repaired which i can do myself just to much electronic and sensor stuff on this one always been defenders and discos before this and before they got to technical.

well i have put the the injector with the sensor in its right cylinder no4 looks like someone has had the injectors overhauled at some time as they are marked with paint where they split so must have been put back in the wrong cylinder ie.no3, anyway hasnt made a jot of differance still a slight uneven idle and runs very eratic at speeds between 45-50 mph could it be the crank senser or does anyting have to be reset since i moved things about.

Nothing should need resetting. You can guess for ever more. You need it on diagnostics.

thanks wammers, i did and they said it was the 4th injector which happened to be in the 3rd cylinder it has been relaced with a new one and put in its correct cylinder now

Yep and now it is in the right cylinder - recheck the fault codes on diagnostics and check live data it may show up something now it is in the right place...!!

You need it on something like Nanocom where you can compare CPS and Needle sensor outputs. Also fuel flows. If that doesn't throw anything up then it maybe an injector. Try cracking them one at a time, if it makes a difference that one is ok. The one that makes no difference is the duffer.

thanks saint will get it booked in again, have to say this is a helful site quick replys to anything i have asked didnt know what site to join at first glad i chose this one.

thanks the guy plugged something in at first and it didnt show anything up then he plugged a lap top in and it did, will try that cracking an injector loose it looks like they have been reconned but i know that goes for nothing

Whilst there is a lot of banter on LZ - the information and knowledge available is second to none!!

Obviously wear thick rubber gloves and protect you eyes with safety specs....The FIP delivers Diesel at very high pressure, so high it can damage your skin

No danger Ant, have done this many times. Except if you're daft enough to take the pipe off and stick your finger over the end of it. That will make your hand plump up a bit. :):)
