take out the door lock mechanism and strip it down, take the cover off it, about 6 small screws, connect it back to the car and fiddle with the little motor inside, you'll probably find it will lock all the dorrs sometimes but bot others. the alarm will also go off, just press the fob, once its doing locks and unlocks consistantly with both the fob and moving the parts then pack it with grases and put it back together(i used vaseline!!) should be fine then for a few years, its not guaranteed but a bit cheaper than a new part.

there are two wires(sets of) that go to the mech, one has several wires and a multi plug and another has just one wire. make sure these are nice and clean and secure.

also check the microswitch on the mech is good and working!

if it works youve save a few quid, if it doesnt youve wasted an hour of your life learning how to take the mech to bits!!!

Thank you very much

no worries nathan, just let me know how you get on as some people have success and others dont, i did mine and they still work well!

Hi, i also noticed today the drivers door mechanism has been altered (i think) so that it doesnt work of the key only by the fob and i have only one fob am i right in thinking if i dont buy another fob i could find myself in a bit of a pickle? or is there a fault with the door lock? where/how would i buy a new key/fob.

is there a key hole? if so i think the bar might have fell off that links the key bit to the mech. it will become clear when you take it apart.

if you have rave cd then look at workshop manual part 2 section 76(or 79) body and chassis, front door!

that will give you an idea of the parts and where how the various linkages come off!

It has a keyhole yes, im having the front windows tinted a little tomorrow so i think i'll ask them to leave the door cards off.. thats half the work done lol

if the door rattles like something is loose inside then the rod is deffo off, have a good look at it see what happens!!

Thanks for your advice, ive done the drivers door and it was the linkage.. the passenger door i stripped down as you said but it must be knackered, is it defo the motor on the mech? i dont fancy buying a new mech to find its something else further down the line (electrics or the like).

nothings deffo in this world mate, strip the mech and see what you find, worst case is you have to put it back as is but i am sure you can resurect the one you have!

theres a box in the door thats got a pcb and 3 little boxes one of them click when i use the fob to open/lock is that normal?

im being a pain i know but.... any idea what voltage the motors are on the door mech? i though about testing it with a direct current but dont want to fry it

Hi guys, so now the proud owner of a 4.6 P38, I'm adding to this as my central locking is not working well. It unlocks on the fob but won't lock on the fob or using the key (the drivers door locks but not all the others). Obviously pretty new to this so hoping someone can point me to the place to start looking!

Many thanks
