I see, does it switch off (or whatever it does) when the engine gets warm so you're only adding cold air?

Reason for asking is I saw someone selling some device on Ebay that claimed to bypass the EGR and improve the performance of the turbo. If the EGR only worked when engine was cold there would seem little point by passing it given the time the engine takes to warm up.

Cheers

Don't buy **** off eBay, just remove the hot gas feed pipe from EGR valve two 8 mm bolts (13 mm spanner) and block it off with a coin. Bolt back up job done.

This P38 your working on doesn't have LOCKHEED written on it anywhere by any chance does it?:):):)

Don't worry wasn't about to spend £57 on a random piece of pipe to fix something I didn't know there was a problem with, plenty of other issues that I need to buy parts for first :).

So is disconnecting the EGR something that is worth doing?

Yes for sure. It slightly improves cold power, does nothing when engine is warm. You will just get a bit of **** in the atmosphere when engine is cold for a few minutes. May also increase fuel mileage slightly.

It would appear our friend Smurf_110 has gone away to scratch his head. Bet his brakes are no better.

Perhaps he was pressing the accelerator pedal and thats why the brakes weren't working.

Yeah maybe the go faster pedal, instead of the go slower pedal. It takes all kinds. Most of them come on here at one time or another.:):)

lads i recommended leigh to log in here as i was nowwhere near HER at the time. i wasnt sure what she was talking about either and still am not sure. however that doesnt give you an excuse to take the ****.she came on here looking for advice and help on her P38. the reason she has not been back on here as she is a busy single mother and unfortuanately being a keyboard warrior like the rest of you comes way down the list. however she has spoken to a landrover mechanic, described the symptons and he told her where to look and that what was she reported. when i get a chance to look at it myself i'll be sure to educate you all as to what the problem is.

No need for education my friend there is no vacuum brake servo on a P38. Simple as that. If she has a vac pump on the front of the cylinder head that is for the EGR. If it is a 1997 model it should not have EGR. He was not a Landrover mechanic then if he told her that. 200/300 TDIs Discos have a servo and vac pump, but that is on side of engine to rear of FIP.
For someone asking advice to come back and say they have found a hole in a vac pipe that should not be there is ridiculous. I do suggest you take a look, because if it has a vacuum servo it is not a P38, unless it has been butchered.

it appears to be a leak in the pipe from the abs accumalator the one that goes round the back of the engine.i know her vehicle well and its definatley a p38 engine, it does not have a servo and its definately not a 200/300tdi. she described the pipe to me over the phone and thats all that i can see on my own vehicle. the mechanic she spoke to is a proper old school time served mechanic that happens to be in charge of the local main dealer, what he doesnt know about all landrovers aint worth knowing!

sorry to cause offence,i dont think anyone wanted to.i suggest SHE changes HER mechanic HE should know what model or if it has deen butchered

Maybe you should look at it for her then. She was obviously looking at a Lion and describing a Tiger. What she said did not make any sense. Was she saying the dipping she refered to was actually the ABS brake fluid header tank then? Because the only pipe across the back of the engine is the feed to the N/S front brake.

which oil level is low?the engine?brake fluid?come on tell HER mechanic to give HER the correct information and terminoligy that will help everybody to advise HER

She obviously does not know about vehicles. But a supposed Landrover mechanic telling her to look for the vac pump and servo on a P38 is a little hard to understand. We now know (i think) she was asking the questions he told her to ask apparently. But then again he might have got the wrong end of an inexperienced story as well. **** happens.
