Hi folks. Good to see the forum thriving. And despite G.Brown (fuel tax) and green anti 4*4 lobbyists we have not been driven off the road or burnt at the stake...

My RR ( a 2000 p38 vogue 4.6 auto) seems to have decided only to change up to fourth until at least 50mph.

I did do a search but could not find anything ( tho' maybe my search terms were wrong so apologies if this has been discussed previously)

- This 'problem' is even on a light load and not accelerating hard. I recall that it would run happily at down to 30mph in top and would change up much earlier than 50mph. No longer so. Mechanically all sounds fine, though the box does seem a bit 'hesitant' when it does choose to enter top gear. This change of habit seems persistent. Fuel economy has been trashed so I know somethings afoot here but am I going mad?

Any thoughts / advice / cures?
What does you RR do for change up down points?
Could it be a gearbox or management software fault?

Many thanks in advance...

It's normal, I find you have to get to 47-50 mph depending on which size wheels you have before it changes into 4th.

Have you got it in sport mode?????

Nope! - I was going to mention that but kept it out as I type too much anyway! But thanks for asking. I have checked that its not stuck in "Sport" mode by comparing status when changing gear. -It did not seem to matter when not thrashing the old bird.....

Well Canyon, as they say up home " I'll go to the foot of our stairs!" - I could have sworn that it has changed much earlier. For one reason - I have done a similar journey many, many times and recall being in fourth going into a 30 limit and it staying in fourth ( me noting the low rpm on the tach) and thinking how well the torque pulls this heavy beast in that gear at thirty. It drops down to third in those places now - strange...
Also, I previously have got far better fuel economy than I do now - and my driving style has not changed. Perhaps in old(er) age the RR is now doing what it should... empty my wallet!

Thanks anyway Canyon! perhaps I am going mad as her indoors thinks anyway...... are those men white coats arriving out there?? :p

Anyone else???

OK then. What about brakes binding, or wheels not spinning freely??, I think I'd look in that direction first.

When I first had mine it wouldn't change up til the sort of speeds your talking about and performance was poor.

Turned out the Air Flow Meter was duff and the engine although running smoothly wouldn't rev or produce power / torque it shoud. With a new one fitted it runs superbly and is usually in top gear at around 35mph and will sit there quite happily.

Thats thrown a spanner in the works.....Ok then, I done a short test this morning with my 95 4.0 SE, it changes into 4th at about 45mph (flat streight road). So... I might have a problem I didnt know I had...!!!??!!

check yer oil in the box; if it looks the lest bit dogey then chage it anfd if yer box has a filter change that aswell.. lots of auto box problems stem from either burnt oil or blocked filter.

Good suggestion, I thought about this any didnt post it because this is exactly what the garages will tell you - change the oil and filter, but most indys wont tell ya that the filter is a mesh filter and it hardly ever clogs up unless( as mentioned above) your bands are starting to break up in the box.
What mileage is your car?
I would go down the cleaning the MAF route and checking the electrical connections.

Thanks Dorset VogueSE, I will look at the MAF while I'm at it...

slob: Ok, Gearbox oil change may be in order... I like to keep the engine oil up to scratch so looks like a good grovel under the landie coming up! All I need now is some dry and preferably warmer weather...

Canyon: Mines got just under c.94,000 on the clock. A fair bit of that was motorway driving by the last owner ( up to 64,000)

wadebuild: Bummer! - one of the problems contributing here methinks!

Thanks all for help, much appreciated.

Yep, funny, I was thinking the other day that I should change the gearbox oil, 'cause mines getting a bit 'clunky' but still not too bad.......so I think i'll wait for the spring :)
