Morning wammers, thanks for the info, is it a separate level plug because looking at the photo the OP posted you would not get much fluid in before it ran out. I don't have this problem, mine's a manual, my problem was the £2 spring pins that hold the release fork to the pivot shaft shearing. Who thought of that set-up?:D:D

You mean the roll pins or scroll pins. Never dealt with them on the P38 but have heard the stories. Think you can get them with a double scroll, one pin inside the other. James Martin may know about that.

Thank you for your advise on this I've tryed to undo it but it starts to bend the sump looks like the sumps coming off to?

Job done and I was tempted to tack weld the bloody thing on. Still if it does another 120,000 I will be looking at the lid. Only do about 2000 a year with this car :D:D

This is great advice. Thank you. I'll have a go with the heat first isn't gearbox oil highly flammable tho?

Ok that's good to know was thinking of unbolting the 6 sump retaining bolts and replace with a second hand one with the correct plug

Hi everyone, just to go back to the problem I'm having with my filler plug on my auto box sump... we've established that it "sure aint normal" so I'm looking to replace the sump with a new/second hand one but I cant find one anywhere all the breakers don't really want to part with them because it will make the gearbox incomplete can anyone point me in the right direction please.

Will

Take the sump off, get the plug out by whatever means necessary, go to a local metal basher and get them to weld a suitable threaded stub in.

Morning. its a good idea and I have thought of doing just that but id rather not take something like this off and hope that I can get it bodged back together id rather take it off and fit the new one straight away.

It would not be a bodge and if you chat up a metal basher first, you can have it off and back on in a day.
Otherwise pay up and go to a stealer or a ZF specialist.

Ok quick update... I've finally managed to source a old stock new auto sump however it is from a older model p38 so has the dip stick rather than the inspection hole. will this be compatible with my newer model? will there be any issues fitting do you think?

Just get a dipstick and fit that, makes life a lot easier topping up and filling.

Ok so as you know I've had trouble with my plugged gearbox sump.. So I've bought a new one plus new oil and filter etc my question now is ...

I've been told (by my main stealer) that the transfer box doesn't have it's own drain plug and that I will only be able to get around 5litres out of my gear box by undoing the gear box sump (I assume they use the same sump) So what if I backed my truck up on to some car ramps. so that the auto box sump is now at a 45 degree angle and all of the transfer oil will drain in to it and out too... Any thoughts?

Transfer box does have a drain plug and it does not share oil with the gearbox. It is separate. You will only get around 5 litres from the box rest is in torque converter. Get warm, drain, change filter refill. Run for a couple of weeks then change oil again less filter. Whomsoever you spoke to is a dickhead.
