I have just bought a 2002 Vogue SE 4.6. The auto box works fine but the selector can be moved without a foot on the brake or without pressing the lock button on the gear stick. Therefore the gears can be selected easily and freely but it should lock in position and only move when the button is pressed. any ideas?

That's normal the selector switch is used to select low range
Not entirely accurate....

The P38 lever 'button' has 2 positions, first detent allows movement between drive selections, although movement between D and 3 is free....

The second, further, detent position is used when selecting the drive ratio....

Over time, the selection detent gate wears out allowing the selections to be made without or with minimal use of the 'button'.....foot brake interlock I belive was only on the US (NAS) P38's

OK I'll investigate further, it just pulls out of park in to reverse and then drive with no lock, any ideas where to start ive on built manuals before.

No need to get into the gearbox itself, the selector 'detents' are under the lever itself, remove the centre console and lift the selector surround clear and you should see the mechanism under there....RAVE will tell you all...
