I have discovered how the spring loaded ashtray stays shut and opens when you press it.

THUS...the ashtray lid sits on a little axle : at one end of the axle is a spring : at the other end of the axle is a cog.

The ashtray lid itself has a plastic cam at each end : when the ashtray lid is closed one end of the cam engages in the cog in the axle and prevents it going back.

When you press the lid down it releases the cam from the cog and the spring takes over thus opening the lid.

I may open a small business specialising in RR Ashtray lids.

I hate to make this public but this was something which Wammers did not know.....do I get a prize ?

Of course you do, it will be delivered in the next few days. I'll print off your post and take it to the pub tonight and explane the workings to the barmaid.:)

I expect she'll be impressed and if you should get lucky just remember who gave you the information.
Pity I'm too late for the New Year's Honours list.

I've got an old one that got a soaking. You can have it for the postage if you want to play with it.

Bugger, I've had an arse of a day myself. Changed the engine on a 2.4 Transit and it wouldn't pull up to the gearbox. Dragged it out again and found the spigot bearing had dropped a roller so preventing the input shaft from entering fully. New bearing was £26 inc trade so it's not only R/R who know how to charge.

Parts for almost anything are bloody ridiculous these days. Unless you get pattern stuff which is generally crap. I'm sure manufacturers sell cars at cost and make the money on parts. :D:D
