Hi, I pick my P38 up on Sunday,while im waitiing for the days pass im asking the owner as many questions i can before viewing /buying. My P38 will have a single point LPG system on it, its a O.H.G (american with a air mixer in the air in take). I also have to get a certificate for this as there is no paperwork, and it needs tuning (it tick-over and revs on gas but he says no mid range) ringing up local LPG installers (two) ther quoting £150 for cert only . Should my alarm bells be ringing at this stage and my rose tinted specticles be taken off. Eddy
 
Depends how much your paying, and if all is well in other areas. Have you driven it yet. Ask your local installers for a price to convert it to multipoint and use this as a bargaining tool.
Mine has the prins plus system and that cost £2300 to install, will be selling it soon and hoping to get around 4K for it and thats for a 97 4.6 with 125000 miles but had new liner rebuild around the 100k mark, so do your homework, lpg doesn't add to the value but may make it easier to sell but in your case does the opposite.
 
Cooker ring LPG is not good enough for LP RR's - Gems or Bosch,if you insist on buying it then get a port injected front end kit on it,then you have some chance of decent engine life and performance.
 
Hi, Thanks for your reply, would you explain in more detail "cooker ring" are you familar with this American system, Gems and Bosch these must be Multi point systems, and the porting kit what does this consist of, some more help in detail. Colin
 
i think what eight is trying to say is "cooker ring lpg" = single point .
very basic system , and its way to old tech to run properly when installed in a p38a .
my present rangerover a 4.6 hse was fitted with single point when i bought it and to be honest it was a real pain , poor performance , regular blow backs in the air box ( i wondered why the previous owner had left the clamp loose on the air ducting ) , and poor mpg figures .
i put up with it for a couple of months and bought a sequential under bonnet kit at around £850.00 and installed it myself .
after i had done this the car was a totally different animal and 100% better drive .
you could end up spending 2 or 300 quid trying to get it to run ok and still be left with a totally unreliable and unsuitable lpg system .
gems and bosch are the engine management systems , gems up to 1999 and bosch after that date , the later bosch system is easily identified by the inlet manifold which is nicknamed banana type manifold for obvious reasons the earlier gems equipped engine has a rectangular shaped plenum chamber and says either 4.0 or 4.6 ltr on the top .
the cooker ring or single point systems use a mixer ring attatched to the end of the throttle housing to deliver the lpg to the engine where as , multipoint / sequential systems the lpg is controlled by a ecu specific to that system and it takes siganals from the engine management system to inject the correct amount of lpg at the correct time depending on the engines particular needs , multipoint as the name suggests , use`s electronically triggered injection to deliver the lpg to each indivdual cylinder .

is it just a case of follow the instructions or is it more complex?

im no mechanic but have several years tinkering experience on a s3 landy & my P38 -

hiya i found it dead easy tbh mate but, I've got 35 or so years experience as a hgv mechanic , that said though as long as you have a half decent tool kit and you tackle the job in a practical and methodical way its certainly not difficult to do .
i had a couple of minor glitch`s along the way i.e not enough rubber hose in the kit , but as far as doing the job goes its a straight forward project really , just dont rush it and make sure that all your joints both gas and electrical are good .
the instructions i got were clear and precise , and if i needed more info the company i bought the kit from were more than willing to give as much advice as i needed .
the electrical side of things is not over complicated either from memory its only about 8 wires that need to be connected , i bought my injector loom as a pre made item , not very expensive at all , the rest of the connections are just plugs .
