Just needs Netframework. Will not run without it. As long has he has XP service pack 3 he can just go to windows update and let it do it.
Not if it has never had netframework installed, my old laptop was on SP3 but no netframework, since installing it it updates along with the rest of Windows.
Any version from 2.0 and upwards will do.

If you don't have service pack 3 you cannot download windows updates.

Read it again Tony, I said it was on SP3 but had never had netframework.

Yeah i know what you said. What i said was IF he has service pack 3 he can download it from Microsoft. If he hasn't he can't. He said it was an old laptop if it is only at service pack 2 updates will not work.

It will download fine manually on SP2 as long as he goes for version 2

That is not my experience of XP on service pack 2. Maybe you can download net framework from elsewhere on the site i don't know. But service pack 3 is no longer available for download from Micosoft (any that work that is) without it, Windows update will NOT work. You can get on it but it locks you out and you can't download anything. If the Windows XP disc you have is SP2 and your computer crashes, then you reload XP at SP2, Microsoft update will not work until you load SP3. To do that you have to buy a disc from Microsoft. I should know i had to do that last year when a hard drive failed. The PRO version maybe different i don't know, but it certainly applies to the Home edition.

I've just D/L'd from that link to put on my old Laptop....worked fine!

Intel all the way for me...never have trusted AMD...

The problem is with AMD processors. Tried downloading all it said to do, but after installing SP3 and the computer automatically shuts down to load it the comp just blue screened on start up every time. Only when i got the disc did it work. Windows update will not work unless you have service pack 3 installed.

There you have it, the problem is with AMD. With my Intel laptop it was possible to manually download net. I have also done a disc wipe and reinstalled from the original windows disc, it happily performed all the updates including SP2, SP3 etc automatically, it took several hours though.

Must have been a while ago then, because SP3 is no longer an automatic update from Microsoft. And without it windows update WILL NOT work. Installing XP and SP2 is not a problem it is on my XP disc. But windows update WILL NOT work on SP2 as it used to. Support has been withdrawn. That is why you have to download SP3 separately even with an Intel processor. That download will work with Intel but NOT with AMD. Support for SP3 is being withdrawn next year. So windows update will not work on SP3 either after that.
