hi guys its been a while since i asked for help but please could you assist i have a low miles p38 4.6 and im getting a whining noise originally i thought it was a wheel bearing but i have now been told is the transfer box ? however i have also been told its rare this is faulty ? .
guys please could you help if there is anything i can do without shellling out another mortgage for another box or is there anything i can do to it which is cheaper or have i got to just bite the bullet .
cheers in advance

Hi ohgoon2006,
Transfer boxes are a very sturdy pieces of kit and are usually only damaged by miss use or no oil. Have you looked under the P38 to see if there is oil coming from the TB, ie prop shaft exits and or from the space between the gear box and TB. Also you might want to get the P38 lifted off the floor on a two post lift and run the system just to be sure of indeed where the problem is. I have a problem with mine which I am trying to get sorted but it is electrical. If there are oil leaks everywhere you may just get away with changing an oilseal and then top up what ever as leaked.

Good hunting.

cant seem to see any oil apparantly my local specialist reckons on full lock it sometimes catches and apparently there are little filings in it ? but im not sure like i said seems to work ok but very noisey dont want to give it a service if its gonna be a waste of time .

I am confused what is making the noise and whats catching at full lock? and where are these filings? the transfer box does not move!

the noise is like a whineing noise .. speeds up at speed and slows down when coming to a stop . apparantly they said it was catching at full lock ? and they reckoned there was small filling inside it like a ball bearing ?

i cant say i have noticed it they said it was snatching second cycle round but like i said nothing has become odvious to me
