OK, i'll start at the beginning. 31st July went on holiday for 10 days. Left Rangie at home. Got back 10th August, moved Rangie off drive as Volvo got puncture. Next day Rangie battery dead. Tried to jump start off Volvo, won't start. Took battery off to charge, charged, put back on, KEYCODE LOCK OUT! Sorted that today, new battery, still won't start! Everything works, cranks over fine, won't start!!!??? Plug lead off, crank, can't see spark. Can't hear fuel pump. Can't afford a packet of Smarties! HELP!!!!

it is becm out of sync with engine ecu only a 2 min job but needs pluging in, or you can buy a box to do it yourself

Trying to find someone local to come to my house to do it! Mate of a mate of a mate kind of thing. Almost there, will let you know.

Hi,
got a similar type problem with my Dads P38. Its been left standing a while and the electrics are how u say..buggered! They go haywire flashing up with lots of different messages and the vehicle wont start.
Is above the type of remedy we need to be looking at?

cheers

make sure the battery is fully charged,p38s will give all sorts of problems with a low battery.

domod what is flashing up? have you got a spark at the plugs? it could be lots of things more info is needed to give you the help you require. j

It comes up with all sorts of messages such as, various doors open, sunroof open, bonnet open, engine disabled (unlocking it on th fob sorts it temporarily) and Im pretty sure my Dad said he had seen what Mr Rossi had...key code lock out. There is also a whirring sound, which sounds like its coming from the doors?

I suspect it could be the battery as there is spark and it does (very weakily) try to turn. The messages are on faint which i assume would be battery related. Problem is it is fully charged from a long long trickle charge. would a boost from my landy when it is in this 'fully charged' state do any harm?

Also, unrelated, when my dad left it on a long long charge I smelt rotten eggs! is that the catalyst??

It is a 2.5 DSE if that helps, 2000.

many thanks guys

ok start at resetting roof and windows by open fully and close in one movement. jump syart will not do any harm just help it, not sure it out of sync, bad eggs smell is prob cats. hope this helps. j

Cheers J.

I'll have a crack at that.

Just out of interest though if it is out of sync, does the system need to be reset?

cheers. dom

First step is get a decent battery. A dodgy battery will show all sorts of faults and if it only turns over slowly then the battery is likely shagged. Long charge + rotten eggs = cooked battery, the smell is hydrogen sulphide methinks, batteries always give off hydrogen when gassing whilst on charge. Could also be bad connections on the battery but in view of the smell I would suspect the battery:eek:

try new/very good confirm battery, if you do jump start it make sure you put neg lead to body/engine and NOT to the battery if its petrol, if diesel then you can go straight on battery.

once you get it started, check alternator charge rate. turn eveything on that uses power, light full, heated seats windows blower radio hazzards etc etc, then see what voltage you have, you will need a digital multimeter for it!!!

as for poor connections, try it with a jump lead from battery to alternator bracket. this worked on mine so i added an earth or two rather tan rip out the old stuff i just backed em up!!!!!!

heel o Mr Rossi,

Did you sort your P38?

finally got ours sorted and is running clean as a whistle now (except for non-friendly suspension), to all those that said it and all of you did....it was the battery! I brand new battery sorted the problem but we did have to reset the computer using a method I have never seen done before but it says it in the manual and it worked!- With the unique 4digit radio code, we had to manually turn the key in the drivers side door lock from 'unlock lock' in realtion to the digit of the code, e.g. if the first number of the code was 5 then 5 times the key needed to be turned and so on, make sense?

strange but hey it beats going to the garage!!

cheers
