hello

i think i have an oil leak on my 4.0 p38 well it's pretty obvious to be honest floor where car is parked is coverd in oil and i keep having to top the oil up every few weeks.

was just wondering does anyone know where the common oil leak spots are? its been like this for a good few months now and seems to be getting worse and ideas? also is it safe to drive or could i be damaging the engine? thanks

I think they have a few. Favourite is the rocker covers coming loose. You need an 8mm 12 sided socket to pinch them up.

Also around the sump where it joins the block.

My 4.6 was rocker covers. Cleaned them up afterwards and been fine since

1.
Rocker cover gaskets..especially the cork type...replace with later rubber type
2.
Valley gasket end seals
3.
Sump to block seal..on early engines this is a coating of RTV sealant (No gasket fitted)
4.
Front cover (Crank pulley) oil seal
5.
Engine oil cooler & hoses
6.
Poor oil filter seal and in some cases the seam of the filter canister itself.

I am sure someone else will add to the list

thanks for the replies. found out that the leak is coming from the crankshaft apparently it's a major job to fix so i was told to just leave it.

Whats more major , a siezed engine, a fire under the bonnet or undoing a few nuts and taping in a new seal. Go for the fire option if you want the insurance as a saized engine is not covered.
