Hi
I bought a 2001 DSE Auto to replace a new 90 that I bought and couldn't get on with for the very reasons you cite, even in a new one!!
The RR has been a bit of a trial but I have had about 10,000 miles of trouble free cruising in great comfort between London and Cornwall after I fixed and replaced many parts
You really do need some spannering ability to own one of these cars, loads of help and advice from this forum helped me through every problem, it's a huge source of knowledge.
It does use a lot of fuel even as a diesel, I get between 20-30 on a run.
I keep threatening to sell mine as it has let me down recently, but it appears to have been a failed part or maybe my lack of attention to coolant levels.
I did consider a RR Sport before buying the P38 but I thought it better to have the money in the bank during these tricky times.
Do sometimes regret getting rid of the 90 but I just couldn't get on with it.
Good luck with your search, a manual certainly narrows your options a bit.
