My 1997 P38 started yesterday but when gear lever moved it wouldn't select any gears or leave park. (Its an Auto box!)

I suggested to wife over phone to leave it running for a while to warm the trans oil and see what happens.

After a while it selected reverse, but now wont come out of reverse so wont start, - The questions are

1) will I cause any problems by starting it with a remote power supply to starter thereby by-passing the inhibitor?

2) Is this likely to be the extreme cold? will warming the trans oil via a hotair gun on the trans sump be likely to help ( I suspect the trans oil is old and due for a change, havn't had it long but on the to do list)

3) If I disconnect the battery to let it all reset itself will it cause any other problems?

Hope someone can shed some light on this! as other car is off road as well, needs me to crawl under it and its not too inviting with 6" of snow on ground.
