Yeah, they shouldn't really have a problem. The engine is also found in the Vauxhall Omega, and numerous BMW 2.5 diesel cars with it being a BMW engine (I've just changed the engine in my wife's P38 with one from a BMW E36 325tds).
My main complaint about most garages now is that they no longer repair things, instead replacing them. I would suggest however that you find out what warranty is supplied for the refurbished pump and the warranty for the work carried out just incase you have any further problems. Also, did you authorise the garage to carry out the work or did you just ask them to find out what was wrong? Did they give you an estimate at the very least for the work before starting because I'd always insist on this so you can speak to a couple of garages to find out if you are being charged a fair price for the work?

Will ask about the warranty thing. I think they took it as given that the job was theirs as the AA man had dumped it there and they know I need it for work as soon as. They did say it would be £800 for the refurb on the unit and then labour on top, indicating its a big job to remove it and re-fit? Local landy specialist said he would have put unit on from breakers yard, not bothered with refurb'ed unit as an R reg RR not worth that sort of money. Anyone agree with this?

The reason I replaced the engine in my wife's P38 DSE as because the pump started leaking but when I ent to do the seal myself I found the main shaft that runs through the pump had sheared into three pieces (plus some shrapnel) and so the pump was scrap. The RR is an N reg and so fitting a refurbed pump at £800 plus vat just for the pump wasn't worth while (I only paid £2500 for the car). Next on the option list was one from a breakers yard for around £400 but due to the fact I'm pretty good with cars I decided I'd just buy a BMW ith the same engine and switch it over, which I've done. I then sold parts I didn't need from the BMW and I have made back the cost of buying it so I got the engine with working pump for free! All it has cost me is my time.

It all depends on what the car is worth to you. If you intend keeping it then a new pump would be an investment as you now shouldn't have any problems on that score for ten years or more.

Can anyone tell me if you need to get the Exact replacement for the FIP for this car? The old one has a part number on the side of it and there seem to be ones about with slightly different part numbers? The car is still sitting in the garage as I decided I wasn't willing to pay the £800 plus fitting as I don't intend to keep the car. Can anyone suggest breakersyards to try and do I need to specify the exact part number for the FIP? I urgently need one, but want to keep cost down as much as possible. Based Yorks, if that helps with suggestions.

You at least need the same electronic top section. But did you confirm the fip is broken? From earlier in thread it seemed likely to be something else.....

The garage took it to reputable place in Hull - Kingston. They ttok apart and said it is 'knackered' completely inside, shattered? Cannot be refurb-ed. Need either one from scrap car or a refurbed one from somewhere else. Breakers yards don't seem to have them...rare to find one? 3 weeks in the bloody garage now, no closer to getting it fixed.

hi,here's a no to phone,i recently changed my fuel injection pump,i bought it of this breaker's in england, he seemed to have a lot of p38 parts, you could give him a call and see if he can help you out,07853891173,cheer's pat.

Seal on pump top does leak now and again. I would not say that a three quid gasket needs a pump refurb @ £800.00. Better replaced by bosch service agent though so pump can be set up. Calibration may cost a few quid but it won't be £800.00

just had my injector pump recon for £200 by a bosch agent. although they have said that it will fix the leak it can't be calibarated due to wear on the pump....does that sound right wammer :p

Many thanks for this. Unfortunately when I rang the garage to say i was getting it moved to a landy specialist nearby they said they already had the engine in bits, taking the pump out. They are sending it for refurb and will then re-fit it they say. I've got no choice on this now. Think the bill will be about £1200 when they've finished. Not a lot I can do now. I'm worried, having read some postings on re-fitting this pump that they won't have the specialist skill to do it properly?

 my rangey has been in the garage old part taken off sent to exeter to bosch pump recon place and back to be fitted total bill £390 i would question how many hour they are taking to put on the pump. my guy said no more than 4 hours to remove and put back on.

i would suspect they would have got your old pump reconed and refitted it and said it was a new recon unit!... why don't you send the pump to a bosch agent for a quote yourself it is your pump and i won't cost you anything. i don't trust many garages sorry i always get them to put the old parts back in the car in a box so i can see them and have even thought about spraying the inside of the engine bay with smart water or uv spray so i know they have changed the parts and the parts they took out are mine.

About an hour to remove, and an hour and an half to an hour and threequarters, to replace.

many thanks for the number, unfortunately he didn't have exact part needed but will def use him for other bits. Thanks!

Bought second harn pump from MJM in Hull, they have lots range rovers breaking. Good service, can deliver or collect. It's being fitted now, along with new battery. Cost £250 for the pump and £20 for a good battery. Bill might not be as bad as thought. Thanks for all the great advice - really helpful and will definitely take up advice again...much appreciated! Will see how they get on with getting me back on the road!

Collected car yesterday, having had second hand fuel injection pump fitted and new battery. Diagnostics needed to get it going (?) and it drove ok to work. On the way back...smoke / smell and ground to halt....peeing out fuel again and AA have now dragged it back to garage. Do you think same problem again or something else? Can't believe it. HELP

You'll have to have a look and see where its coming from - possible that they just forgot to do a fuel hose up again properly.

Hi, only had this 1998 P38 diesel for 1 week and got in it and wouldn't start. Turned over but nothing else. AA man came and said battery needed replacing but then said he could see fuel leaking from somewhere..but not sure where. Had to be flat-bed trailered to local garage. They now saying the fuel injection pump needs replacing..£800 for refurb one plus fitting. I also had problems opening the driver door with key fob, had to use key although fob would open rear doors? Could all this be linked. Car didn't cost me that much so the bill looks frightening. Please, any help would be great - live near York is anyone can recommend.

Sounds a bit like Dean's problem last week http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f10/stuck-coalville-p38-dse-no-start-any-idea-154619.html
