Hi again. So I've changed the fuel filter and decided I had better get the car on the diagnostics before I try to guess the issue it has. When I'm on the motorway at constant revs it feels like a misfire but only very slight, almost like a flutter. If it was a petrol car I'd say it was a plug spark breaking down. It also sounds like petrol engines do when they ping which I suppose in my case is a diesel knock.
I've searched the threads on the subjects but people do seem to have a lack of power with the same fault code. I don't.
So my garage says it's not the boost pressure sensor causing my issue. They say it will be an injector breaking down as this will give the same symptoms as a faulty spark plug in a petrol. It's also really really crap on fuel. If it was this bad when the fault was fixed, couldn't keep the car. I reckon it's doing 25 mpg and I drive steady.
I'll replace the sensor anyway as its throwing the fault code. But are the garage likely to be right about an injector?

be worth checking the vacuum hoses for leaks .. in particular the one that's connected to the turbo solenoid
( .. which in turn operates the turbo vanes .. )

Manual...thanks for all the info. I've just stripped everything down to the head, de greased cleaned sensors I found and checked hoses. Nothing obvious except gunked sensors.

That's 10 or more Mpg short of what you should be getting. So it's definitely got an issue somewhere.
I'd start with a complete cleaning of the intake manifold and EGR valve, maybe even deactivate the latter.

Yes I've given that a good clean and I understand it's the EGR that's the cause of all the gunk. So I will go ahead at some point and blank that off.
Just put everything back together and done a quick test drive. It seems better but will do a longer trip tomorrow and post results.

Get a Freelander, the wife said, it's got such a cute window in the boot that the dog will love when it's really hot. Stuff the dog, what about me having to try and fix the blooming thing!?
So the only sensor I couldn't remove was the boost sensor as the star shaped bolt was a different size than I've got - maybe a special tool required. But the fluttering has all but gone just barely noticeable now at lower revs. But the knocking! It's so much worse. I've read through the threads here on it and it does seem A: common B: tough to get to the bottom of. Although it's booked in on the 10th for an injector check, I'll take them out and clean them in the mean time. The knock is worse under load. Had it have been doing it when I test drive it, I'd have walked away. It started after I put BP premium diesel in. Have put in a good injector cleaner but only done about 120 so far...it's just getting worse. Not driving it until I sort it as it is sounding like it's gonna knock the big ends out!

Has the crank snapped? It's not unheard of for the M47R crankshaft to snap, right at the cam chain end, giving a knocking sound.

Mine gave boost sensor fault code when it was the crank sensor not fitted correctly so broken crank could be a possibility. Try a socket on the pulley bolt with engine off and check for free play.

I'll check that but I do think it's not that bad, I just know it shouldn't be doing it. Thanks again, will check and report. Surely if the crank had snapped the car wouldn't go?

Don't believe it. Mine did a few thousand miles and pulled horses and cars whilst broken! The bits locked together before they finally slipped out of togetherness and locked the crank.

Crank has no play what so ever I may try to record the sound on my phone tomorrow and if I can work out how to put it on here I will.

Just thought I'd post an update. I got the injectors tested and two were an issue so I've replaced them all. It's now running much much better. Apparently the hose that goes to the intercooler is perishing and so there is still a very slight flutter. I will get the silicone ones, I think. But at least it doesn't sound like a bucket of rusty nails!
