After sitting idle for 4 weeks I took old bus for a spin today. Almost literally.
When I set off I thought the steering 'a bit stiff'. After a couple of miles I need two hands and a lot of grunt just to keep the car on track. By the time I got home it took all my strength to turn the wheel and park the car.

No leaks, no squeals, no lights on the dash.

What do I look for next?
 
Just checked the PAS reservoir. From the outside it looked up to the mark. Took the cap off and find the damn thing empty! Where's it gone?

Ordered a lire of PAS fluid. Still don't know where the old stuff went though.

Looking through other people PAS related problems I think I'll replace the reservoir as that seems to be where the filter lurks.
 
Take a look at the steering rack you may notice that the power steering hose connected to it as rusted and it as pins holes, yes also changed the power steering reservoir, after you have changed the hose that as failed, I had to change main hose from power steering pump, as well as connecting pipe work, few photo below for you, only use the proper powering fluid which is green by the way.

I had trouble with my fixing bolt the allen key had round a little so would not budge.

I ended up knocking a socket onto it to get it moving took me about 45 minutes just to remove the bolt, that was after removing the power steering main hose from the rack.

I tagged the power steering hose pipe with a cable tie as I need to cut through it with some cutters, you maybe ok and not need to.

The new part was take to pieces as I only need the one part of it, and it made the job easier for me, your situation maybe different you will know as you go.

New and old main power steering hose as mine had also rusted yours may not have and you may get away with the one part. (LR029185)

I also replaced the Allen key bolt with a normal six side bolt.

You will need at least two litres of power steering fluid and you will need to bleed the system, clear first then after top up and purge the steering by turning the steering lock to lock while the car is on good axle stands.

Check the expiry date on the fluid too.

Well, it's not a pinhole weep, but a massive "pissing out as fast as I can pour it in" type of leak.
I poured a litre in just so I could move the car to a better position for fixing it. Result? A driveway liberally splattered with steering fluid. 'er indoors not amused . . . again.
So, hoses and pipes to be removed and replaced asap.
BTW. I ordered a new reservoir/filter from Bearmach at 14:45 yesterday. It arrived while I was having my breakfast. Top marks to Bearmach.

Was it from the same area as mine? and does it look like you will need both parts as above in my post? if so only purchase genuine parts, after market parts are not cost effective in my opinion.

 
@Arctic2 As you would expect the weather broke yesterday so I've not been able to get under the car to source the leak. Whatever it is it's substantial, not a weep. It is possible something was flung up off the road and fractured an already corroded pipe.
I'll post some pics of my findings when I get round to it.
Agree with your comments re. OEM parts. Brakes and steering are not something you want to leave to chance.

Just looked at your video. I notice your fluid is red. Mine is green.

The video is not mine it is one just to show how to change & flush the reservoir, in the video the chap is using the wrong power steering fluid, it should be GREEN, as in the photo in my previous post.

Got the head off the allen bolt. It sheared.
Managed to extract the plate/spigot. Tomorrow's task will be to extract the threaded portion of the bolt.

Success. Remains of bolt extracted and hose removed.

Okay, looks like I need to order parts LR001099 and LR029185.
That latter is a collection of hoses and the bracket that connects to the steering rack, the former the HP hose from the pump.
Like @Arctic2 the only part that's failed on mine is the pipe at the bottom end of the HP hose. The rest of it is pristine.
How does the HP hose from the pump connect to the HP pipe to the rack? I was expecting that to be a single assembly, but it's not. Is it a simple push fit? Do I need special tools?
