hi all, i have had my p38 for quite a few months now, and have already chucked money at lol. but i am struggling to solve a few problems with its general running.

currently it is almost misfiring on cold start ups almost chattering, or dragging a cylinder seems to dissapear when warm, but smells of unburnt fuel most of the time. when cold it chucks out a large amount of black soot, again it goes once warm. (no white smoke)

she been fine a few weeks ago i had to go though a massive flood where buy the airfilter got soaked but no water got any further than the filter, thank god. (just rebuild a friends 300tdi disco after hydrolock)
rencently i have done the fan belt tensioner, oil air and fuel filters, new alternator. and shes just had her clutch done to. i have also noticed she isnt pulling as good as she did. and help is much appreciated.

struggling to find where to start looking at
 
i did mean to add that after the flood she was fine this started just a few days ago before the alternator went and after the fan belt tensioner.

is the bolt that goes in at the top if tensioner near the timing chain ?
 
Sorry Mrs. Wany but rather than taking the shotgun approach and trying things in whatever order can I suggest that this is a time for a diagnostics session. If you stick a location into your on-screen details you might even find some-one on here local to you.
 
Black smoke missing on one cylinder(or more) after possible water droplet ingestion, I'd start with a compression test.

Suggest check all fuel leak of pipes and the little map pipe the one that goes from the fuel filter to air manifold . Ps diesels don't misfire on start up
 
Ps on start up sounds like all your glow plugs arnt kicking in .checking power issues as before with pipes , or turbo hoses and inter cooler
 
thanks for your suggestions. many bits i thought might help. yes fully aware the dt dosent misfire but, i kind if ment missing or dragging, not when warm.

been out for a drive this after noon seems good enought, i am finding that the turbo seems extra twitchy, but i am probably hearing things.

will do a good overall check tomo, as have to do bearing for MOT !!!! anyway. will take out injectors to check and look into glow plugs.

plugs could explain the unburnt diesal and rough running till warm.
