Hiya, new to the forum, be nice!

I am looking at building a bespoke camper to cross Africa in. Heart says it has to on the back of a Landy. Head says do it on a Hilux (boo hiss)

I have seen a 130 with a cherry picker on the back. Ideal base to start from once the cherry picker is removed? Is removing the PTO going to cause problems? It is a 1990. Simple, no electronics.

I live in SW france

Good base or not?

Have you driven defenders before? Tried and proven, yes and a way cooler vehicle than the hilux but I’d still take the hilux! Way comfier, decent aircon, stereo etc. You’ll also likely get more for your money.

Welcome.

You want comfy miles go for the Hilux. This motor arrives from Germany,Greenlanes for 3 days has a week of relaxation and goes home. Also does continental trips through the year.

Your conversion will be fun and the removal of the pto will be easy. It should either bolt to the rear of the transfer box or run off the front engine pulley.
A 130 is a very big motor to drive around?
Good luck& keep us updated

Hi, yes I have driven a lot of 110s in the Alps. The arm position did bother me on long trips I have to admit but I did get used to it.

It's true that I can get a 10 year younger vehicle if I go Hilux or Nissan patrol.

Heart still says LR though

I take your point about the 130 being big but if I am going to spend 3 months at a time or longer with the wife, we need a decent living space. If I was on my own I would go for a 110 with AluCab pop top but we cannot make do with a 120cm wide bed 😜
