Hi all I've got a 110 with a 300tdi disco engine it tends to run near to the red most of the time is this normal it's had the head done and a new thermostat should I go for a rad upgrade I don't won't to do electric fan

It’s not normal to be near the red line with any engine that I know of, when the engine is running and everything is functioning correctly.
The 300 tdi engine does run cool when fitted into a disco, so cool that owners are known to remove the viscous fan and leave it off permanently.
The disco tdi has a large radiator with an 11.5 ltrs, so do you have a viscous fan fitted sucking cool air in through the rad, if so is it fully functional, the thermostat should be fully open at 88 degrees the LR part no. is ERR3291.
 
It's a disco engine in a 110 would the rad be suspect I will have to check the stat but it was renewed
Leave the thermostat.
But the rad would certainly be on the list to check as part of the engine cooling, and along with the rest of the system.
U should test and not guess, a bit of a pain I know but backward flushing your existing rad may help but that’s not always 100%. So if the rad has been around for a while and externally looks it going by the condition of the fins, then I would get it refurbed or replaced with a rad to match the 300 tdi.
You could drain fully the system an refill to check the volume of the coolant that’s required with the existing rad, give or take a 0.5 litre or so.
 
Haven't thought about that it will be a disco sensor on the engine can they be swapped to defender sensor or should I change the gauge

A good call by OWAS as this a issue that’s cropped up before over the years when replacing engines and even recently, as the info wasn’t applicable to me, it’s diesel, I just brushed over it, but not only the temp sensors temp rating but the thread of the sensor can be different, so just a comparison of the specifications of the two sensors, I didn’t find out what happen other than taken the two items to a supplier to compare.
Its strange that your engine never boil over, my experience is if the temp is heading for the the red it doesn’t stop, the next thing is boiling over.

Ive got AMR3321 in mine which seems to match the gauge, stays in the middle, if I forget to open my radiator muff it goes slightly over half.

Ofcourse, make sure it isn't actually over heating.

Edit - I've just found my thread on here when I had a similar problem, the wire on the back of the gauge was loose and damaged causing it to read high so I ran a new cable (I also had a headgasket leak but that was seperate:rolleyes:)

I've ordered a new sensor to suit the defender I'll try that and check temp with a scanner if it's all ok I'll change the gauge for a digital one. Thanks all for info
