You cheeky bugger!!!! Can't disagree tho can I lol ;)

Hi mate - I may be in need of it I think, I'll send you a text later letting you know the prognosis. Lol

drop us a pm on here *dont get texts back on the farm*

here's a thought.

you had your rad out yet? i remember there were some third party ones that didn't have the baffles.

so the water went straight in and out. you could stick a marble in one hole and it would be able to roll out the other, so no water was circulating properly.

The new ones seem to be aluminium rather than brass. Have you tried bolt extractors on that rounded bolt?

Yeah I had it off and flushed it. No it appears to be original. Bit of a bugger really as it looks in generally good condition.

mightn't be the rad.

i'd keep the ir gun in the landy and next time it does it, go and shoot the engine, pipes, and rad.

see if you find any cool spots, as in temp blockages and the temp matches the gauge

Yup I sure have. I have even used the Erwin 3/8 socket which also appears to just turn on the head. It's really annoying given that once the top bolt is removed the housing is able to slightly move up/down 2/3mm. I fear the only option I have is to grind the head off using the dremel and then remove the housing, hopefully I will be able to get the grips on and remove it that way. Any other suggestions welcome tho lol :)

That's the plan, it's just ruddy irritating being an intermittent fault. When you sing the ir gun, what temp range would you expect to find in a 'normal' working lump. Well I say normal lol

88, give or take a few to surface loss.

see the rounded bolt. can you not take the entire housing off, not just the elbow?

it looks like 2 bolts on the top and the bottom two are slotted, so can lift out

I got one of the cheap rads with plastic tanks out of necessity. That was three years ago and it's still going strong.

I put some kettle descaler in the rad then run it round until nice and hot. Let the thing stand overnight and drain and flush. My TD5 did the same with the temp climbing aon a long motorway run towing a trailer and a new rad solved the problem.

Mmmmmm now that's an idea. Is that image representing a 300TDI..?! It looks different.

Can you cut a slot in it and unbolt it?
Yup I've already done that, it then just once again rounded the remaining part of the head. I'm amazed just how soft the metal appears to be.

yeah should be.

be easier to work on, on the bench.

Yup you're right, that is it. I'm going to remove it tomorrow.

You don't know the part number for the bolts do you.?! I need to get some to replace the rounded one. :)

you not got a defender parts catalogue? page 232

stat if you need it is ERR3291
housing gasket is ERR3490

bolts are FS108251 (6 of them) - looks like FS108256 is the same thing

the bolts seem to be flanged m8x25. probably cheaper to go to your local fastener place and pick up a bag. take one down to check against incase i'm mistaken :>

Thanks :)

Nope I don't have a parts catalogue, would be much easier if I did.!!!
