just had day out at friclkey off road centre and for the first time the engine overheated and the radiator filler released all the water
just got home stopping every 5 miles and washed it off and let cool down
filled rad back up and its still overheating , thought it might be radiator full of mud , but still same when cleaned off
any ideas ?

Is there signs of bubbles in the header tank water? and did you bleed the system properly when you filled it up?

Bubbles suggest head gasket failure which results in an air lock in the water pump which gives overheating. There are other failure areas too, such as the liner problem on the 3.9 and 4.6 engines, but the tin gasket on the engines is a failure point.

Without thinking the worst, how's the fan working? Did you let the coolant level drop low and get an airlock praps. Could also check that the thermostat isn't closed shut.

Don't think HG yet. What engine is it BTW?

Thanks Hope its not head gasket
water coming out of header tank only when it boils , twin kenlow fans working fine
thought it may be mud but washed off rad and still overheating
will drain down and remove rad and clean off thoroughly first and refill system

If it's a RR or disco 3.5 or 3.9 then head gasket failure is a fairly common problem, both engines are not noted for slipped liners as the RR 4.2 and 4.6 are.

Sorry, have to disagree with that as concerns the 3.9. This engine is the first of the ill-conceived 94mm bore blocks & can/does slip liners. I speak from bitter experience :(

I said "not noted for slipped liners as the RR 4.2 and 4.6 are" therefore not as common as.
It does happen and I know you was unlucky as I ask the question from you on the symptions, so I know should I be unlucky also.
I believe it happens with 'gas' fuel'd V8 often as well.

'93 3.9 full LR service history, gas converted at 85k - slipped liner one year later (after several probs. with the lpg system) at 97k. Mate had the same disaster after roughly the same mileage post lpg fitment. I had a new block fitted, mate scrapped his RR. It's 3.5's running on the 'proper stuff' for me these days. Symptoms? in the early stages a tapping at piston speed that only becomes audible as the engine warms up, not to be confused with tappet noise (which is half the speed anyway) which can occur when cold. If you running on LPG at the time, switch over to petrol & the sound may cease after a couple of miles, due to the lowering of combustion chamber temperature.

Newbie suggestion but could it not be because the lpg fuel has less lubricant than the unleaded fuel which the engine was designed for?
or is it common to both petrol and gas engines, i know they are all petrol etc but could it not be similar to the old 4 or 5 star petrol, folks using unleaded without the additive, fine for a while then the valves burnt ?
Like i said newbie alert so i'm probably talking outta my as*e!:)
