Having purchased the Td5 from a friend. Who said it had overheating issues. I started to diagnose the problem. It had already been fitted with a new viscous fan and thermostat. So I flushed the system and changed the water pump (which was quite choked up) and the small holes in the side were blocked. I changed the thermostat for good measure but after 15 miles or so it overheated again. So I went to remove the new rad. When I removed the top hose I noticed a black plastic bung inside the rad top elbow. When the garage had fitted the new rad over 2 years ago, they must have left it in when fitting it. I removed it and low and behold the landy didn’t overheat. RESULT. Never trust other people’s work. Always check the obvious. Here endeth the lesson.

That’s pretty daft - but a good spot! That mistake could have led to a perfectly good car being scrapped!!!

I checked my truck on purchase as the guy i bought it from said it was loosing a bit now and then - top hose had a slit in it where they had levered it onoff with a flatblade screwdriver and punctured it. Cheap fix but it really didnt need to happen. Kinda mistake i'd make being an at home learner rather than a garage. Glad you got to the bottom of it before the headwork bills started to dull your passion.
