O.K i need help, My 04 1.8 has an occasional overheating problem. First the garage replaced the thermostat, seemed to cure it, then 4 month down the line, it did it again. Head gasket o.k, so drained, flushed & bled system. O.K again. Couple of months down the line, it started again.
However, the twist in the tail.
I have noticed it "jumps" up to hot, rather than raising as it normally would, & the cars not over hot!
Then i noticed if i turn the ignition of & on, it resets the gauge. Pointing to an electrical fault. Is this common, is there a quick fix, that doesn't involve a main dealer!:confused:

The blue connector on the outlet stub of your engine is the one for the temp dash gauge, sounds like a faulty sender, simple refit
 
Thanks, is there any way to check or test, before i replace even more parts?
& is it deffo the blue one? Cos the blue one on rimmer bros website is the oil pressure switch! (or is it just a generic pic?)
 
I wouldnt go with a pic, get a part number confirmed. I know the brown temp sensor is NTC, neg temp co-efficient resistor. This is a feedback for ECU, controlling ignition, fuelling, injector mapping.
The blue one might be PTC, pos temp co-efficient, not sure, I only have resistor values for the brown one. I could always back probe the wires
 
really confused now!
Posted the last bit, & the car works fine. FOR A WEEK!
Yesterday - sat on the motorway for 3 hours, nothing, not a care in the world.
Last night, drove 1/2 mile went straight to the red. Parked up - checked the coolant - everything was fine.
Left it half an hour it was fine, then jumped to the red, turned the key off, waited 30 secs turned it back on, everything fine.
Driving down the motorway it was up & down like a fiddlers elbow, cold - ok - hot - cold -ok cold.

This morning, right as 9 pence!!!

so confused!!!
 
I think I might have the answer to this problem....
The engine coolant temp sensor does not go directly to the instrument panel.
There is an ECM in the middle - it is quite likely that the instruments are controlled by this ECM and, if that was faulty - would give peculiar and erroneous readings. The only way to be sure is to check the actual coolant temperature with thermocouples.

I aint saying that is what it is - only that it could be. Get it checked properly with thermocouples.


you need to know whether you have an overheating problem or a display problem.
 
Do you have the two sensors on the engine outlet stub?

A brown one and a blue one?

Brown one runs to ECU as MHM posted above, blue should go straight to the dash gauge.
 
Thanks guys, but am not technical, so looks all your hints are way above my head.
Looks like i have to get the L/R man to plug it in then!!
