Ahhhh cold water in the header but over heating....any suggestions please??

Yep water pump not pumping or thermostat stuck shut.

Even if the pump is spinning it might have disintergrated inside

Easy check - take out the stat and see if it opens and closes at the right temperature in a saucepan of water

Hi there thanks, its a new stat as of yesterday but i didnt check it first, i`ll take it out and check it, if thats fine i`ll check the water pump, will an air lock cause that problem?

Yeah could to, is the overheating according to the gauge or have you measured the temp of the head or something?

Would be worth picking up a cheap IR temp gun to check accurately - I thought I had an overheat problem but it turned out the gauge was over reading

What engine btw?

yeah it is according to the gauge. the head water at the stat is very hot either side so the stat is working, just wondered if ive not bled the water system properly when i changed the stat yesterday. 300tdi

Try a proper bleed first then see if the heater works, if so that proves the pump is working.
