hey there, im new to the forum and to landy ownership so please be gentle!
i have recently purchased a nice little series 3 with an attached fairey o/d.
i have no documentaion for it and so i dont really know how to use it properly:rolleyes:
i think that i should only really use it in high gears 3 and 4, does that sound about right?
if the lever is fully forward i would presume it to be engaged and with the lever fully back is it not in use? also what is the middle position? thanx for any help!

You don't need it :D
Give it to me I'll take it off your hands:D

The stick usually only has 2 position Normal and Overdrive.
you can use it in every gear if you want but 3rd and 4th are the best.

With the over drive and the High / Low (red knob) you effectively get 12 Forward and 4 reverse if you could be bothered.

smashing thanks!
so forward= overdrive
backward= normal! cheers!
i might get rid of the o/d anyway cos the damn engine is smokin! and the o/d is probably the most valuable part of the vehicle!

what is the neutral for? is there any time you should use that?

The neutral position is for when you want to sit in your truck with a confused expression wondering why the fecker won't move.

Chuf.:D

Seriously if you do decide to loose the OD give me a PM.

yes i will do, im thinkin of replacing me tired ol diesel with a 2.5td, so i think to help fund the engine i would probably have to sell the o/d. :(
how much you think it would be worth?

Dunt ask that. Daft'll offer you a fiver, he alus duz.

Research it, then sell it t'Clive cheap cuz 'ees poor as a church mouse.

Nah, it'd be good. Might mean you've half a chance of not shaming us as we all (well, me at least) has to drive to Salisbury @ 30. S'jest you alus offer a bastid fiver FFS!

get some of them eggpanding space saver spares. and a 12v compressor. when you want overdrive just inflate yer tyres a bit more. this has the added advantage of giving you a infinite number of gear ratios.
another top tip from slob's book of top tips

just dunno if what i see them goin for on flea bay was the goin rate or not! not seen em for sale anywhere else apart from the ridiculous amount they want for em new in the usual landy mags!

i am poor as a church mouse too so it would have to be considerably more than a fiver tho!

They tend to go for anything between £200 - £350 - the lower priced ones tend not to be complete or have silly ending times.

I've just put one of mine on ebay (blantent plug following) and it's allready got 25 watchers after only being up for a day.

I did advertise it on here but didnt get any interest, but if anyone is interested drop me a pm with an offer?

Land Rover Series I/II/III Fairey Overdrive on eBay, Land Rover, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (item 150146852015 end time 09-Aug-07 22:30:00 BST)

To be fair the going rate for a used Fairey overdrive is around £200. Mine was and most of the ones I was watching went for around that, give or take £30 or so.

The ones that went for a few quid more were generally one's that could be demonstrated as being good (i.e - still in the vehicle until after the auction ended so you could try them if you wanted to) the one's that went for less were generally pulled out of some wreck or other, no detail was posted on the listing and generally looked pretty oily & unloved - so were less than confidence inspiring.

Mine was a shade over £200 & obviously well cared for, does the job & doesn't whine about it.

The price of Fairey units has generally come down as a lot of parts are getting difficult to source.

People must have been feeling tight if you only got just over £200 for yours, most working ones that i have seen over the past few months have gone for well over £250 but i suppose your location/collection options would make a difference.

Currently on ebay item number 260143589662 is allready over £200 and there's nearly a day left.

I've never had any issues getting spares for the ones that i have refurbished over the years - Winch Repairs could sell you allmost everything to build a new overdrive, apart from the main casing.

winchrepairs.co.uk - OverDrives

mine is in good condition, no visible leaks, all the bits are there and it can be heard/used in the vehicle before collection so i hope to get a good price then if i decide to sell!
have a feelin that if i get rid of it then after i have me new engine in or whatever done to me landy then i will probably regret gettin rid!
if me new job just oop road works out then i cant really see the point in keepin it tho, wont be doin many miles!

Hi nohoper,

This is a great forum, learnt many things from these guys.

Just got my S111 LWB back after the head cracked, it's fitted with a 2.5D N/A and a fairey overdrive, trundles along at 60 quite easily, 70+ downhills.

I personally only use the overdrive above 50 and in 4th, I'm told, (though people on this forum would confirm this, or shoot it down in flames, albeit nicely) if you use the overdrive in 1st or 2nd, you running the risk of damaging it, as the ratios are to different between the boxes.

All the best with yours, Mark
