Hi All,
Went to see a Defender 90 300tdi CSW on an R plate with FSH today in the rain, 12 month MOT straight panels, looked nice problem was it was showing 200k on the clock going back tomorrow for closer bodywork inspection as it was poring down, has the engine had it at this milage or at £5000 is that a normal price, Engine seemed ok but thought I would ask the experts!

Any help welcomed!

£5k is way too much & check the chassis it's almost certain to be like tissue paper. if My 96 110's chassis is owt to go by..

Good idea on the rain check. Although it's well known water leaks in through the roof and out though the floor. they do it from new. Did the doors or wheels fall oft when wet?

My 1991 200Tdi was £4000 4 years ago, and that was a rebuild on a galvanised chassis.
As for the mileage, it's now on about 220k, it's a little smokey on starting but totally reliable. Well, apart from the lack of turbo power!

Ok thanks the chassis seemed ok the driest place to be was in or under the car so got that checked out ok nothing on MOT about chassis or bulkhead advisory wise either has a slight leak from power steering reservoir, new tyre in next 2000 miles, it's just the milage was my main concern!

If well maintained could well get another 50000+ miles on the clock

Chassis might be fine - my 1994 90 is

Price possibly top end, but not out of the ballpark for a 1996 county spec this time of year

Seems a high price but it is winter ,check if it left the factory as a csw as this will effect resale value ,200k isnt high for an 18 year old car aslong as it runs ok now you should be fine for a while

It's incredible how well defenders, 90's and 110's keep there value. I lost £13k on a three year old volvo recently. Give it another 3 years and it will be worth less than the 18 year old 90 your looking at and it will be scrapped long before it gets to 18 years old.

Very true. We've got a '96 Volvo 850 estate here. Superb 2.5l five cyl engine, leather interior with electric everything, an absolutely great car, paid 500 quid for it. My '92 Defender cost me a bit over two grand to buy about a year ago but I know I could get half as much again for it easy. It makes no sense.

Price seems top end, but if everything else is straight and healthy I wouldn't be that bothered about 220k for that age - its going to have been used....... Got that on my Xreg and runs like new (well apart from the new head, etc etc etc but that's a TD5......;) A
