I have a 98 freelander and it as started to rev up to 3000 rpm whilst idling I have fitted a metal throotle body and a new potentiometer but the problem remains.

Any ideas ?

hi
check there is some slack/freeplay on the throttle cable if thats ok try putting the ignition on (engine not running) then press fully down on the throttle pedal and release 6 times then switch ignition off that should reset throttle pot.

Just been out and checked.. There is play in the cable and i tried the throttle reset and.......... i still have the problem

Have you looked for an air leak downstream of the throttle body?
