Good afternoon gentlemen/ladies.
I have just purchased an R reg diesel privately, and within 2 days of running it I have a fault.
When first starting, the engine ticks over beautifully, however, after about 2-3 minutes at idle, the engine revs to about 2000. It will stay there for about 10 seconds and then drop back to 1200, then back to idle. Not a massive problem, it just catches me out every now and then at the lights. The bigger problem is it also seems to cut out when driving, only very temporarily, 1/2 sec or so, the check engine warning light comes on, goes back out almost immediately, and then catches up all on its own.
This does not happen every trip, but one in 3 or 4, I have also noticed that wehn it does happen, there is an audible warning of 4 double beeps, which sounds at the same time as the red alarm light on the dash.
Have I bought a monster, or is this anything I could look at?
Please help

Hello,
Sounds like a problem with the fuel pump.
Is your car a Discovery automatic with a 300Tdi?

Could be 'pulling air'. Is this possible on these more modern type of machines. I'm only used to old engines with no electronics but the symptoms sound familiar.
