hi there,
A challenge!
I have a very hot transfer gear box, gives great underfloor heating but gets abit hot when my seat belt buckle starts burning me!!
oil ok and changed, runs like a treat any suggestions?

Sounds like something is rubbing/wearing thats getting hot, is it not making any noises?

If it's trhe gearbox getting that hot buy a big fire extinguisher.

Otherwise suspect the source of heat is radiation and hot air from the exhaust pipe.

Hi There,
Thanks for replying. Thats the strange I would expect it to be knocking or crunching but runs a treat!! But it really gets hot to level that it could melt any wiring close by!!

Hi,
I was thinking of that!! on account of the any close wires might melt!!
It is possible it has something to do with the exhaust, once the weather improved i give it a better look

snot the hand break over adjusted? thats in the right facinity and would cause a lot of heat build up. just a thought.

Once you do get some good weather, go for a little run, and check the handbrake drum is not roasting hot, as said it is in the right vicinity and could easily be transferring heat to where your finding it.

I have a similar problem. Just got my 90 2.5 diesel last week and when driving, the girlfriend noticed the back of her legs warming up. Hi/Low box lever and casing was mad hot. Can anyone advise on possible causes. the guy i bought it from told be that the lever was not connected he didn't know the reason why. Also while on the motor way she was driviing fine but when I would take my foot of the accelerator I could hear a wiered noise underneath and feel a slight knocking, but as soon as I accelerated it would stop. I especially heated up while driving in town. I hope this isn't anything to serious. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

EXHAUST PIPES!!!!

HEAT comes through thin alloy really fast .... and RISES in town driving .....and radiates off the pipe to the gearboxes.

If it really bothers you there is no reason why you should not wrap the offending length of exhaust pipe with heat-cloth tape stuff, and wire it on.

The exhaust is the first thing I thought of and was thinking I could put a heat sheild on, but when I look at the exhaust it is too far away from gear box to generate that sort of heat.

You reckon?
You underestimate the amount of heat involved, the temperatures of the pipes, and how the heat radiates.

If your rear silencer box is all choked up it will cause the pressure in all the system up to the box to be higher than it should be, and this means the TEMPERATURE inside the pipes is also going to be higher.
