Apologies if this has been mentioned before. UKGov has till April to decide how to implement. Discuss!

My MOT is the best way of persuading the wife that money has to be spent on the Landy!
And of course, a handy way of fault finding ;)

As for a link try : lro.com/motexemption
There are other links if you look.

Oh arse I'll have to stay in EU for another 14 years!

MOT only cost 40 quid a year anyway, and I like having the tester look over it, check I havent misssed anything.

It will be a scam, they will make them exempt, and then say they are historic vehicles and can only be used on route to a registered event, something like that! ;)

Stupid idea, road tax exemption would be much better.

no if anything im all in favour of 10 month mots and the 3 year rule on new cars abolished.

too many cars driving round in ropey nick as it is

Im 100% happy that other peoples cars are checked annually for safety.

I mean, does your motor pass every time, without fail?

If the answer is "no" then that's an example of you missing something.

Road construction vehicles are operator licence, hgv licence, drivers hours recording and mot exempt.
Wouldn't like to explain that to a judge when it all goes tits up and all the companies I have worked for must feel the same, having inspections done at least quarterly

No No No, as a famous lady once said.
It is often asked "What effect does the EU have on your work or daily life"
I am an MOT tester and find it worrying that Brussels law is being imposed on us. MOT changes are being implemented due to edicts from the EU, not out of some benign British government goodwill to classic vehicle owners. The number of vehicles we test that are pre 1986 is not especially high, but they do exist.
OK, the arguments in favour of classic MOT exemption are that statistically very few are involved in accidents and most are well maintained.
Rust doesn't respect age, and we all know lack of regular use is bad for brakes etc. Tyres are a major worry too. There are mutterings about the datemark being a use by date in future?
A Landrover is easier to roll around under than, say, a Mini, but unless you have a ramp can you really check everything properly?
At £56 for an annual ,professionally conducted safety check I fail to see the sense in this proposal, other than to appease Brussels.
Bad idea.
Jim.

I agree running a classic Series 2 A and a classic mini i like them being MOT tested, makes sure I have not missed anything and ensure all the safety things are safe, I find most MOT testers are fair on classic cars they know the bit that need to be checked and the bits that are just not going to make the modern standards, example being hand brake on the series, passes every year but only just.

MOT's are a sensible way of checking things are safe and keeping us all safe on the roads. Why scrap a scheme that helps save lives. I would still have mine MOT'd even if not required, a cheap annual health check to a good standard why not.

I also agree get rid of the 3 year rule, most people that change there cars every 3 years are not car people anyway and don't do even basic check like oil and tyres. I have a couple of people I know with cars under 3 years old with tyres that are illegal and they didn't even notice and we all know that tyres are the only things keep you in contact with the service of the road.

I think annual MOT for all vehicles is a must.

sooner we get out of the EU the better role on June 23rd, lets get back to letting British people decide what we want in our country.

But please lets keep the free road tax for my classics i do like that, used to enjoy going into the post office and handing over an MOT cert, insurance cert and then no money. Now its online its a little boring.

The classic status thing is two edged.
A way of separating old vehicles from the norm, then restricting their use due to alleged safety or environmental issues.
Of course a Clio is safer than a Mini or a Series 3, but if you want to drive a Mini or Landrover everyday it should be your choice. You keep the specialists in business, you keep specialist insurance companies happy, and you keep a bit of Britain going. Youngsters only see over polished old cars in rows at old fogeys shows otherwise.
I can see a time when all vehicles have pay as you drive black boxes. The European satellite thingy needs to get back some revenue after all!

Passed first time every year since I bought it in 2008. :)
Still like having it MOTd every year. Most mechanical faults I would notice just driving around, long before thay became serious. Very easy to miss a weak area on an old chassis, or something you almost never use, like a fog light, is no longer working. MOT makes you go through and check it all.

I agree. Classic status could lead to restrictions on usage.
All my old kit works as hard and does same hours as moderns, no reason it shouldnt be subject to same testing.

Tax exempt is a nice little recognition of ones role in keeping the national rolling transport heritage museum in the public view. :)

I found the big brother aspects of vehicle tracking frightening. If transponders are retro fitted, I hope they will not survive the bath of Dinitrol inside my chassis. If they do, a spot of tactical chassis welding should deal! :D Of course smart phones can be used to track movements anyway. never been tempted by one of those, far too expensive! :D

I assume the previous 1960 mot exemption comes with restrictions on use? Do those restrictions disappear if you choose to mot yearly like any other vehicle?

I know classic insurance does. Which is why I don't go for the cheap insurance option, I need commercial use whether the vehicle is 3 or 30 years old.

A little less EU ranting and a little more actual infomation would be useful.

Agreed 100%. I think the only caveat is that we, that is, the folk who run older vehicles need to make sure that the test remains fair to them - I am principally thinking of emissions tests. At the moment, they seem reasonable, but as others have touched on above, will the test be "reconfigured" to "give" us classic status in return for severe limitations on usage??

That would be unacceptable in my book

Perhaps it is the case that with the high level of deskilling that has occurred over the last few decades is going to make it very difficult to test "our" vehicles reasonably - since you can't "plug it in" and ask it to diagnose it self.

Just another reason to leave the EU

As prolific reader of classic vehicle publications I think you will find that the EU implementation deadline for the UK to align the MOT with Europe is not until 2018.
Meanwhile this government has officially rejected the move to re-introduce rolling date VED exemption for 25 year old vehicles, which currently stands at 40years.
