hi to you all.1st time post so hope someone can help.
i have a discovery td5 diesel and a elddis crusader storm caravan which i recently towed to the south of france,the whole trip was a white knuckle ride with the car and van having severe wobbles when ever a car or a van/lorry went past now this happens with towing i know as i have towed for 4 years now but these were severe and the disco steering went soft and after i overtook any car/lorry the suction took me over and almost caused me to colide with vehcile that overtook .this has also happened without the caravan on tow so i know its not weight problem.hope the tyre pressures were ok and there is no play on the wheels.hope someone out there can come up with something.

As soon as I press post this will make sence to me, its been a long day, what do you mean by this?
 
slip-stream, dear boy, slip stream!...only happens is you get far too close to the vehickle in front
 
this is a natural reaction. its due to the size and shape of the towing vehicle and the caravan. i drive a lorry most days and smile at myself whenever i suck a caravan in then watch it wobble all over the road as i pass it and blow it out again ;)
 
Yella, that has to be the best game in the world. I like to play it in the Merc Sprinter, it'll do best part of a ton so I watch the caravans wobble in the mirror. With a bit of luck I'll turn one over one day.

I ****ing hate caravans. There should be a law passed that restricts them to being on the road only between midnight and 6am.
 
Aye! yer say that, put who'd you pick on if there was no caravans to play wiv?? Could you do the same to all the Jimny drivers out there eh??
 
as with most forums you always get the comedians,im sure chubby and manning are laughing but on a serious note this is happening without the caravan.

gordon are you saying that this is happening even when driving without the van on the back
if thats the case it must be a serious problem

Ignore the caravan banter mate
i tow a avante 630 with mine i do get a little sway when wagons pass but never without the van on
 
Not sure on a TD5 but I had similar on my 300tdi ( Only with the van on though).

I uprated the springs and changed all the shocks including the steering damper to gas De-carbon I think.

Then on my twin axle Abbey I have fitted the Alko Octoagon shocks and now get very little suction when overtaken by inconsiderate lorries and sprinters :D

yep i get it without the caravan.my friend who has eight landrovers over the years has driven it and agrees that something is not right.the steering seems to go soft and floppy is the only way i can describe it.

did the shocks really make much difference? as i am considering them for mine
 
My 1994 disco300 tdi handles as well as a beached whale at the moment. I am about to change all the shocks and the steering dampener and fit a polybush kit this weekend, so I will let you know how much of a difference it makes to the handling first thing next week . But I do know that the shocks are shot for sure i.e. oil leaking out of at least two of them !!!!!!

...and when your dangerous driving results in an accident which may end up being fatal, i hope you let us know, if they give you internet access in prison.

don't worry sheddy, the prisons are all full of poll tax dodgers, and egg throwers, and other hardened criminals, such as caravanners who are caught on the roads in daylight, they don't lock anyone up for killing people any more.


and I thought I was a grumpy humourless bugger;)

have you ever considered getting a sense of humour and lightening up a little, maybe even undo yer belt buckle one or two notches ;)

thought passing laws was political. howcome nobodys shouting about this one then?
 
have you got a stabilizer bar on? what speed were you doing? van size wieght? packing of van ? there are loads of things that affect stability. packing the van correctly will help a lot. oh and keeping to 60 to stay in front of truckers, and be polite to them they speak to each other, CONVOY STYLE.
