Do'er of stuff and the like
Aside from the 2003 td5 disco that i have that won't start, the mrs 2004 td5 is giving jip.

Started on tuesday morning, got in it to go to work, started up fine, went 50m with it having a terrible idle, never had any issues with it before with this.

Seems like its got plenty of pull for a few seconds then feels like it goes into limp mode, stop, let it idle and it'll do the same.

drove it a few miles wondering what it was then thought i should turn around, it conked out on a junction. Did restart again. But the same issue, and with diesel smoke when sat at idle.

Ive just plugged a nano com into it and when first started the injector readings are ok... within tolerance at least. However, take it for 100m up the road and its readings are +40 +46 etc on multiple injectors and its knocking its tits off.

Fuel pump is working (i can hear it) but not sure if its ok of course. The noise does seem to have changed a little from normal though. Starts instantly, no great gurgly noises. But does feel like a fuelling issue.

All the other readings on the nano com look ok.

Any thoughts?

Ive ordered a new fuel filter (in case its something as simple as that) as to be fair we got it at christmas and i haven't serviced it.
 
i did clean out the harness the other week, I've never had one been affected by oil before so wasn't sure of the symptoms. Ill crack open the eco tomorrow and have a look.

The usual symptoms for the injector loom beginning to fail are rough running, odd engine behaviour, misfiring, poor starting or oil traces in the red plug on the ECU. Those fault indicators often appear long before any faults get logged.
This bloke has done the job and documented it very well. It might be worth taking a look:-

Cheers Brian, I’ve ive done these looms many times before, but only as a precaution after seeing oil on the plug. Never actually had any running problems caused by it. Hopefully this is it, I imagine if it’s causing mega issues it means the ecu will be chokka with oil so I’ll strip that out too. Fingers crossed that’s it.

Need it back and running!

Aye doing that one on the other td5 ... it’s like broken down disco frickin alley on the drive at the minute.

Just managed to get some o rings and washers from 252 spares before they shut for the holiday weekend. Utter gents hung around for us as we got stuck in traffic so we’re late. Top service. First time I’ve used them and will do again!!
 
Well thats the injector loom changed, the old one was rammed with oil. Cleaned out the eco too. Excitedly i started it up and ....

going to do the washers and seals as james suggests next.

I presume if a washer has a slight leak it could be pressurising the fuel system with air. After a quick blast (and lots of knocking) i turned it off, restarted and theres lots of blue smoke for a few seconds then it clears.
 
Yep James was right it was the seals.

Runs like a peach now.

It’s had seals done before from the look of it, well it has done 212k so not unreasonable.

However, found one of the seats to the injector clamps has been damaged, so I’ve cleaned that up, also noted some quite nasty looking scrapes on the oil deflector plate (the one in front of the injector loom)

Could it have previously had a lunched head? It’s a 19p engine (I think that’s what the last of the td5s was called?)

There’s an extra sound deadening pad behind it that I’ve not seen on any other td5s, and bugger me does it get in the way!

Rather irritatingly I’d ordered the special injector removal puller, but done it before it’s arrived!
