I have a land rover with a range rover v8 box fitted ,rather than source a v8 what other options for engine and box do I have ,not interested in speed ,fuel economy would be nice and reliability .

Thanks in advance

This is my dilemma ,I think this may be a lt95 box ,or so I've been told ,a local 4x4 guy reckons it's an early range rover box and is manual 4 speed .

I don't wish to fit a v8 into the chassis and would like something reliable and not thirsty ,what are my options ?

Couple of pics of box

it is an lt95 ,id fit a 300 tdi with the r380 box, youd need the 300tdi seat box ,tunel ,floor plates etc as well as props and mounts

Magic thanks ,I'm new to this game and spending hours googling everything !
The chassis I have is set up already and the box is attached to props etc already ,I'm assuming g that if I can identify the box ,which we have I can look Into an engine for it ,is this right ?

the box is an lt95 you cant fit anything eles besides a v8 with out buying a conversion kit, which cost would be better invested in an r380

The vehicle I have is shortened rangerover chassis with range rover axles ,and was running a v8 3.5 Sdi with shortened props, the box transfer box etc as shown ,only the engine is missing ,I was hoping to just swap in a new engine ,a 300 tdi would be magic and r380 box

Yeah I know I could just bang in another v8 lump but I'm getting 300tdi ,Mazda and diahatsu coming back in searches ,I'm just wanting cheap conversion done and have a s3 to sell to fund it ,if anyone local to aberdeen can help I'm happy to give them the series 3 or the lt95 as payment ,what's a lt95 worth ?

Have you considered what you'll actually use it for and how many miles a year??

As said above, if you want to fit any other engine, then you'll find it cheaper and easier to switch to the more common 5 speed Rover gearbox, most likely an R380 or the older LT77 if not. But you will need to do other things in order to do this. So will make the swap bigger. You might need to do something with the props, mounts, seatbox and transmission tunnel. You'll also need a bell housing and probably a new clutch plate too.

The most obvious alternative engine is a Tdi, either 200 or 300. These are good engines, but noisy and unrefined. And tbh the mpg difference might not be as big as you think.

Most Tdi's will generally average 25-28mpg in mixed use. A good V8 on carbs probably 15-18mpg and one running EFI 18-20mpg.

If you are doing 10,000 miles a year this difference will matter. But if you likely to do only 2000 miles a year or so. Then the fuel difference is bugger all.

e.g.

Lets say you actually do 3000 miles a year in it.

petrol @ 18mpg = £68/month in fuel
diesel @ 26mpg = £48/month in fuel

Is £20 a month really a deal breaker? Not too mention, swapping gearboxes and fitting a Tdi is likely to cost in the region of 3-5x more money than just slapping a V8 in back in it, if it already had a V8 in it.

Wow that's an amazing reply ,thank you for your time ,I hadn't considered that at all regarding mpg ,I was just looking at the cheapest easiest option ,the truck hopefully will be for using to tow a boat a few miles to launch and also used to go to my garage which is on a. Farm road and my daily is constantly dirty and not very good on bumpy surfaces

I run a v8, LPG on that box and it's fine - one day I'll find an affordable overdrive and it'll be even better. get yourself a replacement V8 and simplify your project - thus saving time and money for all the other, inevitable bits that need doing. When was it first on the road? Is it registered as a 3.5? Good luck

It's been built from scratch ,I just wanted a land rover for going to my garage and messing about in locally ,I've been offered a 4.2 efi range rover locally so this might be an option
