It would be easier to fit a replacement head unit. The clock will still show the time without the HU feeding station data. The wheel controls just need an adaptor to make them work, providing you get a HU that accepts wheel controls. I find Sony HUs good value and very well specked ;)

The wheel controls need an adapter. My TD4 is early 2001. The adapters I can find are only suitable for the models after that. So far I've been to halfwords and looked online. Can anyone recommend a supplier please?

The wheel switches are standard resistive ladders. They were the same in all Freelanders, regardless of year. All you need to do is find the HU you want and it's compatible wheel control conversion box. You will need to check what plug the wheel controls use at your current HU to select a conversation box.

That's the problem, I've been told that the conversion boxes that are available are only available for late 2001 models onward ,I have the Landrover R770 HU fitted. Fortunately, I called in a car audio specialist today, he'll fit a Kenwood Bluetooth radio, and sort the wheel controls for £160. Not too shabby
Thanks again Nodge
