Looks nicely done from what you can see, apart from the awful wheel arches. Big gaiter around gearstick? Who knows what mechanically...

Don't know how he can say "original" with a straight face. But Galv chassis got to be good. Whats the engine?

Check the numbers in case it's a ringer but if it's all good, you would struggle to finish a project to that (apparent) standard for that price.

Looks tidy enough and a galv chassis is a bonus, but at that price you are paying for it! Personally if you want something that looks like a defender, you should buy a defender, but you would pay a lot more.
I am not really interested in how it looks to be honest. I am interested in it because it is older than 30 years so as a hobby car it will not need a yearly test, has cheap tax and insurance.

suppose if those bits are all put on after the fact who knows mechanically whats been done.

dash and front clip is defender, isn't?
no idea is it? Is it common that people put defender parts on this model?

He says he has receipts from the previous owner for 7000GBP of work done including an engine rebuild in 2007. He said its the diesel engine it came with but he said it was fairly gutless and he was hoping to put a perkins engine in to it but is selling as his financial situation has changed. What numbers should I be checking for? are there numbers stamped in different parts of the vehicle?

I might go take a peep at it.

Anything very costly to repair that I should be looking out for?

Thanks for the replies everyone

Should look more like this

Main things to watch for is chassis and bulkhead condition really although if they're galved you should never have a problem :) It'd cost you more than that to do the work yourself tbh, if you include time to do the work. Only thing id do is change that front end for a proper series one and ditch the arches and paint it a proper landy colour, but then thats me, I'm sure you'd have loads of fun with it :)

I also think those wheel arches and the defender front look silly, however, if he is saying both the chassis and bh are galved then £3k is reasonable imho.

if you are like me and not that mechanically knowledgeable or skilled in welding etc picking up a truck with the two main items galved and fitted has to be a bonus, galved chassis and bh would be over £2k to buy.

thanks for the info lads. I much prefer the front end on the stock model above, looks nice. I think I would have fun with it :) Getting excited about potentially getting one now.

So galvanized is a bonus then, I have read up on rust in chassis and bulkhead so I guess if you can avoid that from day one it is a plus.

So.... one more I like the look of... anyone give me some opinions on this? LAND ROVER SERIES 3 COUNTY 1983 PETROL For Sale in Louth : €4,750 - DoneDeal.co.uk

I think I am going to go and see both of them but interested to hear what people think of this standard one.

feedback really appreciated, thanks.

Colour is hideous so that's that out the way.
Looks very clean, nice safari roof and no visible rust. But for 4grand I'd like a Galv chassis or an absolutely perfect original.

However, if there's no rust, the engine's good and you have the money then why not?

oh god I want that. have to say I am not a fan of that brown though but I do love the station wagons.

I could buy that and transfer the tax free plate from my 72 :D

I love the brown! haha I suppose we are all different :)

Maybe I will go and take a peep at that one then. Eyes off hololulujoe!! :fencing:

thanks again for all the replies. Nice bunch of lads on here.

The ad for that first one says it has a galv'd a-frame. I thought only coilies had a frames?

Maybe the seller just means the chassis but said a frame instead of just frame? I'm sure that brown one or one very similar was in lro for months and months for sale :D Don't like the stripes on that one, the ones on mine are a much nicer design :)

You seem to be under the impresion that any car over 30 years old will not need an MOT. If only that was right! To be mot exempt it has to be pre 1960. To qualify for free road tax it must be 1973 or older. But at least the insurance will be reasonable.

mot exempt pre 1961
