hi all

right went out to do the thermostat mod on the car today

read up on it so went and got a cheap dremmal to cut the metal band (pic attached)

i could not get in to cut it without first taking all the fu.king inlet manifold off :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

anyway thats all up in my kitchen now as seeing wife out tonight i may aswell try and get that all cleaned up ,also taken the fuel spil pipes off so i can replace them

anyway back to my question lol ,why cut that metal band ,approx 1cm past that there is a clip that looks like when undone you could maybe just pull it out ?

or even so why can you not just disconet the other end of the water pipe from the rad end and slid the thermostat in there ??????????

is it some thing to do with the height ie if at that end would be very hard to get rid of air locks????? or does it not matter?

Griff - even if U did unclip the hose, you would still have to cut the band in order to remove the part of the plastic clip which is still in the end of the hose - you can't get the 'stat in with it still in place.

You can't really put the stat in the radiator end of the hose, it's too far from the source of heat ( the engine ) to work properly.

I also had to remove the inlet manifold to do the mod on my TD4, but it has been well-worth doing - not only a warmer car, but also a 6% improvement in fuel economy !!}

cool thanks for your help

i will put it engine side ,and going to give everything a good clean inside :)

wifes out lol but the diesle leak off pipes are on living room floor so i can fix/make while watching ncis lmfao :)

all made :)

but the kitchen is a dif matter lol still got this lot to sort out

went out today got petrol for cleaning and some bottle brushes
before cleaning i wanted to get the steel band off (what a #### that turned out to be lol)

finally got it out ,next to TRY and get new thermostat in

was finding it very very hard to get in ,so took the pipe off completly
and then :mad::mad::mad::mad: the fu..ing new thermostat broke in to !!!!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

totaly bust :mad::mad::mad::mad:
so the hole point of this job was to sort the thermostat ,but cant till at least next week now :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

so i decided to just clean everything out and put everything back together :-(
but at least when i get a new on the job will be easy as pipe now held on with jubilee clip (with screw part pointing in the correct direction to remove easy )

anyway next this is what came out of my parts

lots and lots of crap ,but all done and clean now :)

while doing this i changed air filter and cleaned the crank breather(petrol cleaned it out perfect in 2 mins)

refitted my newly built leak off pipes

inlet back on

:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:but dropped a socket into the engine ,could not reach it so had to take it all back off again  im a #### !!!
all back together now :)

did now get thermostat done as such ,but now done crank breather, etc, it seems to run much better :)
and no smell of diesle now ive changed my leak off pipes
so all in all the day turned out better than i expected

the one i ordered was the type from the link you just posted but when it arrived at shop it was the one i showed in pics , i checked on google and they say its for that renualt ,and it says its 43mm but to say it was tight was a joke even with seal grease and boiling water !!
anyway im going to order the part next time from uk ,that way i now what im getting lol

The stat in roccotune's link is the correct one - still a tight fit !! Make sure you fit it with the bulb towards the engine, not the radiator .

thanks for replies

i have ensured that the pipe that i refitted has all the new jubilee clips are facing the right way to remove at later date ,so will only need to take that off no need to strip down any further so should be a easy job,i can take it in house and heat the pipe in boiling water

but after looking and reading im in 2 minds if to say fu.k it and change the org one and water pump at same time ,will have to see how i get one with £££ as still need to invest in a vcu so i can put it back into 4x4

Excellent pictures!

It makes jobs like that less daunting for noobs like me when you have something to look at before you start.

i agree

thats why i take and post pics ,some think there is no need ,but for me the pics are much more helpfull than reading a page of text

and of course it reminds me of what ive done lol

Matt, you access it by removing the front offside wheel to get at the engine bay :( I got a garage to do it a few months back

My stat went in really easy - I heard it was a pig but I lubed it with neat red coolant then pushed it in with a socket (pipe not removed from rad) a bit at a time. I walked it in if that makes sense, with a screwdriver when the socket wouldn't do it. It's easy, cheap and really works.

Do you have to remove the original thermostat? Or can I leave that in place? Can you do this mod if the oem thermostat hasn't failed?
