I have in my posession a sick IRD and a rebuild kit of bearings, seals and oil cooler. I've got the IRD off the car and removed the 8 bolts holding the 2 bits of the case together - but they won't budge - I can't separate them. Has anybody here got any tips please?

It looks to have been closed with RTV in the join, I've been picking bits off with 1 hand while scratch my head with the other wondering what to do! I tried my trusty "Budge Anything" hub puller - but there's not a lot of things for it or a wedge to push against. Wondering if I can whack, sorry tap, the gearbox/driveshaft spline with a mallet if that goes to the other side?

Any ideas appreciated.
 
Dear Mr Insurance Man, I wish to make a claim for a total loss of my Freelander. A kind gentleman suggested that I fix my car with a product called "Semtex". I didn't have any, but I know another nice fella, well actually most people think he's strange, but I think he's a good sort, well he sold me some and I tried it, but it didn't work and I wish to make a claim on my insurance. Proof attached.

Hi Pikey. I've seen that page a few times - he makes it sound as if it should just push open, but mine doesn't want to budge. Strange, no 2 jobs the same - my hoses came off easy as.

Clear case of insurance fraud- that car wasn't blown up, it is clearly the Land Rover pre production Evoque. :doh:

Ps, I live in the other Christchurch, the proper one... :welcome2:
 
have you removed the pinion?

it should just split open if this and the 8 bolts are undone.

give it a gentle whack with a rubber mallet ;)

the oil cooler is like a paint tin lid (probably is knowing Land Rover :D) and can be gently prised off with a pry bay or flat blade screwdriver.
once this is removed it allows access to the crown wheel which is held on with a large nut.
 
Yep the pinion is off, that came off before removing it from the car. The 8 bolts are off, but its still not budging, I think the RTV must be acting as a glue. Beginning to get frustrated with this!

Still the sun's out, and I may not live in the "proper" Christchurch (although I do have a cousi-bro who does), but I'm in the Christchurch that any right minded person would want to live in ;) so I'm off out!

BTW - one for the geezer with the mad hats, my boy's motor....

Hey - its apart. Thought I'd give it another try and opened! It had been sitting in the sun and warmed up quite a bit - so I think that's what made the difference.

It actually looks pretty good inside, the bearings are nowhere near as bad as some of the picks I've seen and all the gears look in good condition. I think I'll take it down to "The Diff Shop" in town for them to press out and install the bearings that need doing.

Thanks for your comments, even those that were a tad extreme, helped keep me in the right frame of mind to persevere.
 
Is that the turbo 200 with the removable roof panels? Lovely car, if it is, except for the tendency to torque steer :(..

Yeh its a really nice car - got a bit of a leak from those glass panels though. Spent this afternoon fitting a new drivers door window mechanism with him. Michael's 18 and hasn't got his licence yet but his insurance costs $110 bucks for the year - that's 55 quid - amazing!

Used to live just round the corner from Woodend (Tuahiwi) for a while. Great chippie in Woodend :)

Would gladly swap mate!!! :D Although our earthquakes are a tad milder... :eek:
 
lol, yeh if you want to guarantee sleeping through the night and waking up with your wardrobes still standing and the tele still sitting on its unit - NZ ain't the place to be. Its a mad place in so many ways (eg Auckland, pop 2mil, is built on an active volcanoe field), but fantastic in others.

Yep, God invented earthquakes to create mountains so we could drive our Landies up them :)

This is out the back of Hanmer Springs, driving up the Hanmer River Valley and came across this gully dug out of the mountainside by rain, perfect for a Landie....

Or in winter to Porters Pass for some sledging and BBQ...

And then after building the mountains, why not subduct them down into the ocean to create the most wonderful Sounds, so we can use our Landies to tow boats on holiday. This is at Waikawa Bay in the Marlborough Sounds...

This has nothing to do with Landies, other than my disco being a nominated "Emergency Vehicle", but its one of my favoutire pics taken of me and my daughter on her school camp. The Tasman Glacier runs down the east side of Mount Cook (background in pic), ice takes 500 years to travel from the top to bottom and breaks off in huge chunks to form icebergs in a lake. You can take speed boats out up to the face of the glacier and hop off onto these icebergs! Truely awesome experience.

yup. Very good example of torque steer - that.

In fact as an instructional towing video, it has lots to merit it.:)
