Hi everyone.

I´m all new here and can tell you the great news that I was actually given a Disco 1 for free recently.
Thing is that it has been standing for more than 2,5 years outside a barn.
Anyhow, the cosmetics should be fairly easy but the DRIVE is out of bounds. :(

It is always in Diff Lock High and goes forward and backwards fine, light is also on. If I try to put it in normal High (disengaged) it won't drive at all, the light in the panel goes of though.

Next thing, so I have the diff in Lock High and jack the front wheel up, it turnes around lovely but with the other wheel on the ground - from what I have read this should not be possible in Diff Lock High. WHat could be wrong?
When I jack up the rear wheel and turn it it is LOCKED.
So it seems like it is only driving on the rear axel but not on the front. Is this actually possible?

Any suggestions on how to sort this? Tips on stores for parts?
I really want to it to work with all the gears and give her some new life.

Best regards from Dr Disco(stein) trying to revive a Disco again
/Hawk

Use lots of wd40 on the linkages I the top of the transfer box. You can get to them under the truck - the diff lock and hi/Lo selectors go through multiple linkages and seize where they go into the top of the box.

After that drive it and keep playing with your levers and they'll eventually free up!

Hi Basil.
Hmm... Ok. But do you think it´s so simple? thing is that when I do try to put it in for example normal high the light in the dash goes off which tells me the linkage somehow works? I´m thinking it might be a shaft that is broken off or so?
If it is this simple I´m after work tomorrow emptying a can of WD40 in the top of the transfer box!
:)

I assume that your front propshaft is in place? If that is the case there is a problem at the front end - diff or CV joint would be my best guess.

Dave

The linkages are so sloppy that the light can be off when it's engaged and vice versa!

Could also be cv joint or diff as well but start with simple stuff

You know you an put diff lock in whilst in high???

Least you will be able to move it then

Could be a snapped half shaft?, easy to take out just a few bolts and then pull.

If its been sitting ou will want to service it, diff oil, transfer box oil etc

Where in the world are you? If you go to user cp and add it in then people will know where you are and might be able to help?

hi, Sorry for this Deasy.
The CP has been filled out.
I´m from Stockholm Sweden.

Do you mean to pull out the actual diff-lock-shifter inside the car or am I just being daft?
And thing is that if I put the diff lock in HIGH, whilst standing still (haven't tried it when driving), the light indicates that it is not locked anymore but I can´t drive the car then. Engine just revs.

thebiglad and Basil: Is there an easy way to check the CV or diff? Or will I have to remove the whole kit?

So far I´ll start to empty the WD40-can to the transfer box linkage. :)

If the prop was missing or a cb joint or the diff were foo-barred then it wouldn't work in high or low.

A thought: are you sure you have it in high? There's a neutral position and it can be sticky getting it past there if its not used often. Can be easier to engage if the engine is running with the gearbox on neutral when you try to engage it.

Wd40 could be the answer lol!

Also try to double clutch when's big from low to high.

Haha stockhold is abit of a trek for me to come and have a look! Unless expenses are paid :D

I think it engages fine, I can feel it going from low-to-neutral-to-high inside the car, but maybe it´s what you say. It might be engaging inside the car but not really happening down in the linkage.
I´ll try the WD40 first... hahahaha...

Keep it in diff lock low with the lever to the bottom left. Then from that position try to come straight back, keeping it to te left into high?

Hehehe.... A bit too far I guess. But if ever passing...
Tried doublecluthing actually.

you mean to pull it from diff lock low (bottom left) to normal high (bottom right) ?
Whilst driving slowly or standing still?

pushing the lever forward and backward engages high and low, movement from left to right engages and disengages the diff lock.

If the lever is in the bottom left corner you will be in Diff lock high and top left is diff lock low, if the lever is on the right side bottom then just high and right top low box.

if you are only moving it from side to side then you are only engaging the diff lock in high.

This sounds like a broken something in the axle, front CVs are common as are shafts, it don't take too long to strip it down to find out what is what.

Yes, you are so right. I meant what you are explaining. It is actually in DIFF LOCK HIGH and then it drives. So when I move it from that position to the right bottom it is supposed to be disengaged and in HIGH but then it doesn't drive. :(

Would you possibly have any images or pdfs on how to strip the axel and test the CV or shaft perhaps? webpages? or just a good book to buy? Thanks

Jack up front corner , rotate wheel ! If propshaft is fitted then wheel should not turn , make sure you have transfer box in upper right position ! If it turns then you have either a broken half shaft worn splines in drive flange or broken cross pins in diff !! All easy to fix !! It's all in your Haynes manual !!
Good luck !!!
It's probably not a good idea to run it in that. State for too long !!!!

Perfect, I will buy the haynes manual soon then and check all these things. Sound like some of these things might have gone though. :(

And lucky for me she is resting quietly in a warm garage these days, till she gets sorted.

Right, so I haven´t done anything actually except that I had to get it to a workshop to remove the front wheels. They were really STUCK! Took them 6 hours, fire, and a "nut-gun" for trucks to get them off. *phew*
But, now I´m going to get the Haynes Manual end this week and on monday she is getting an MOT just so I get black on white what they think is wrong as well. And then it´s time to get those halfshafts out and also check the front diff!
