After spending a small fortune a few weeks ago on the FL and it running better than ever, the alternator packed up today :eek:
:( Why do these things always happen on a holiday weekend and when I am away from home with no tools so to speak of with me
Anyway, it's in an electrical repair shop for them to replace it and they have promised to do it this afternoon....they are finishing tonight until Tuesday for the Easter hol's.
Looks like £150 ish + VAT for the Alternator and a couple of hours labour.
It appears that the coolant from the worn water pump leak corroded the winding insulation on the alternator.

Mines the same at the moment, one thing after another.......its starting to drop coolant intermittently, traced it back to the plastic pipe that comes out of the front of the engine....the orange rubber seal seamed perrised....so I just turned it the other way round and put plenty of gasket seal around it....no time to by a new one.....if its not that my head gasket must be letting go.....cant see any where else it can be coming from......

No doubt coolant in my alternator too......great.....I hate land rovers at the moment.

next time you do a oil change IR cover the alternator up as oil can drop down on to it and does not do it any favours

I don't feckin believe it !!!!
The new alternator that was delivered to the garage is the wrong one so nothing can happen until Tuesday
So...it's a hire car from tomorrow until Tuesday-yet more expense.
I am really pi**ed off now, especially as there is a Vectra sitting on the drive back home in North Wales and we are down in Walsall. :ballchain::5bbanghead::5bbanghead:

Should have got a nice reliable P38 diesel John, easier and cheaper to fix.

I reckon you are on commission from the P38 division at LR :violent:
Where would I get a BECM, EAS compressor or air springs from over this weekend ???? !!!!
This episode is definately a reason to get the vino down my neck Keith :beer2::beer2::beer2::smokin::smokin:
No doubt the weather is better your end and you will be having a glass or two. :)

My mates alternator also blew on his corsa combo van on thursday these things are sent to try us :D

I feel your pain. Have been watching an inlet manifold on ebay religiously... due to finish today but the seller just randomly ended it for no reason. So now back on the hunt which means more time that my car is off the road.

You can drive the V6 for some time before the manifold chamber fails. If you connect the linkage then unplug the motor, you can still use the car ;)

It's more to do with the fact that the manifold is off and out... i'm being lazy about putting it all back in again only to take it out again ;) so yeah, shouldn't moan too much i guess :p

Try "Cheapest Parts", based in Bedworth nr. Coventry...they have a good selection of FL parts and are a regular advertiser on Ebay-they break all FL variants.

Got the car back today..£429 incl. VAT the total damage. Not counting a hire car @ £75 for the 4 days.
The alternator was £255 + VAT and a regass was £40 as they removed the aircon compressor, plus a new aircon drive belt @ £4.50, and of course labour and the dreaded VAT. The alternator is brand new Lucas and I phoned the Main Stealer-they wanted £288.80 + VAT with next day delivery for a "Land Rover" alternator from their own Land Rover Alternator division, which is next door to their own nut & bolt factory and cardboard box printing facility.....The genuine Land Rover Oil refinery is just round the corner from them.
Ah well, it's back home tomorrow, just hope I have enough juice to get me to a genuine Land Rover filling station !!!:hysterically_laughi
