Afternoon diesel fans!! My mates 200tdi is pretty damn slow, slower than it should be. Also tends to cut out if you blip the throttle or sometimes when you dip the clutch to change gear, any ideas? Im not up in my diesels but could it be the lift pump?
 
The speed of that reply is 10x the speed of his 90. I'll get on the left pump, what usually becomes faulty with them? Isn't it just a basic cam driven fuel pump?
 
Lift pump on mine to , dont use britpart one, got mine from e bay barry 4x4 15 quid to the door.
Made a noticable difference to the power to both cars
Both had failed in the same way the plunger inside had broken from the cam actuated lever

Well it's not the lift pump of filter. Still dies if you rev it then lift off, doesn't seem too keen on starting either! Do they have an in tank pump like most cars?
 
Sounds like you've got some air in the system to me.

Don't think it's air, took my time to bleed all the air out the bleed screw ontop of the filter housing. Even with new lift pump and filter it's exactly the same as before. Can the fuel solonoids partially sticky in one place?? The hard starting makes me think that
 
Did you use the thick lozenge shaped spacer between the pump and the block? If so, don't! It will space the pump too far from the block, the block has its own built in spaceing.

Same symptoms of air, but no air to be found.
 
No didn't use that, managed to work out it wasn't needed, I pumped the lift pump until only diesel flowed from the bleed screw on the filter housing. Could a sticky or stuck stop solonoid cause hard starting, lack of power and cutting out when the revs drop after ring revved on idle?
 
They self bleed real easy so if it keeps on doing it after its been running it must be a serious air leak if thats whats wrong.
fuel filter i just stick it on dry and fire it up splutters a bit but sorts itself out quickly.
Has someone been messing with the injector pump settings?
Ive had a couple of stop solenoids go wrong on one particular tdi engine and i now think the inj pump is dodgy, both time they go no start condition, theres power but no clicking new ones sorts it out again, no swarf when solenoid removed.
You can remove the guts from the stop solenoid and try it that way to eliminate that as the problem, just have to stall it, all thats in there is a light spring and a rubber stopper.

Checked the stop solenoid and that was working ok, it turned out to be the diaphragm under the cap of the injector pump was stuck solid. So im guessing that as it revved it was unable to move so not increasing the amount of fuel delivered. It was well and truly seized up so it looks like its time to change the pump!
 
Ive not seen one of them seize before.
Pumps not to dear on e bay
You can change them without stripping the cam belt off, but its fiddly and you would probably be best to do it the cam belt route.

Ok so it's not stop solenoid...took it out and removed the plunger so it should run until its stalled, still rubbish.

Tried more tonight, the cone the rides up and down with the diaphragm eventually came out and was covered in sludgy rusty looking cack! Cleaned it all up and made sure the pin it runs against for fuelling moved freely, all looked ok. But now the damn thing wont run at all...it wire fire up for a second then die!!

Check it had fuel getting to the pump by cracking the inlet banjo bolt, plenty of fuel going it. When I cracked an injector feed off there didn't seem to be much coming out, now I'm not sure how much there should be but it looked abit pathetic to me.

Starting to think the injector pump is knackered.

Oh an my mate informed me tonight that the car hasn't been used for 3 years!!
