There was a young lady with a Discovery. She had a real hankering for a P38 though so she could tow her horse trailer in style!!

I bought a P38 with no tax or MOT for not much money. It had air suspension problems and had been off the road for 18 months.

Fast forward 3 weeks and it's had new airbags, new brake pipes, pads and discs all round - the EAS has caused my lovely husband more than a few grey hairs though!.....

It went for its MOT yesterday and passed :) It was the first time I'd driven the car and I'm pleased to say that I'm well impressed! It pulls well, the gearbox changes up and down just as it should - The only fault we could find is that the Cruise Control isnt working :doh: That can be hubbys little project for this weekend! :cool:

Thrilled to bits with the car. I'm going to have to be really firm with myself to stop myself driving it everywhere. My Ford Focus Sport is simply not in the same league for comfort!

I just wanted also to say huge thanks to everyone on here for your patience, help and advice (especially Datatek for his 'French P38 EAS Phone Support Hotline') Lordy only knows how long it would have taken us to find our way around the EAS and all its quirks!

I do believe I'll be sticking around on here to partake in banter and post bikini photos;) :D

oh glad your happy with the Range, but seriously where are these bikini shots?;)

The Cruise Control uses a small vacuum pump to draw a vacuum to pull the throttle bellows that holds the set speed....

Most often the problem is the ends of the rubber pipes interconnecting it all have split....take them off and take a peek, if they have split, cut the end off and reconnect.

You can also try the 'suck' test on the throttle bellows.....take the pipe off but leave connected to the bellows end....suck on the end and the bellows will move, plug the end of the pipe with your tounge and see if the bellows start moving back again, if they do there is a split in the bellows.

The system also uses a second brake switch with a pneumatic vent on, that is mounted on the brake pedal. This switch is what tells the Cruise Control brains to switch off and also to phsyically vent the vacuum in the system to release the bellows. On a previous 4.6 Petrol, this switch was the cause of my CC woes.

The diesel doesn't use a bellows as the CC system uses the EDC system to alter the fuelling required to hold set speed, but still uses a second brake pedal switch.

The RAVE manuals do describe some troubleshooting steps quite well.

Another common cause if the switches in the steering wheel failing too....

Glad it passed the MOT after standing for so long, but knowing the incredible hard work you and your husband have put in, I am not surprised either...!!
 
Good to hear youre up and running! Trouble with landrover ownership as you already know is that it's like a disease really. I ran a p38 for six years tried to leave the brand for a break then returned to buy an l322,2002, td6. There's just something about the rangies....
 
Good to hear it's a runner. Now change all the oils including diffs, transfer box and auto box plus filter and you should be set up for at least a week of trouble free motoring. Seriously, mines never let me down in 3 years despite some niggles, hope yours is as good.

One of my pipes had split in the middle, so don't just check the ends :). I got a bit of replacement pipe free from my local independent...

Seriously though, well done for resurrecting the RR and getting it through it's MOT!! Good work!

Some people on here are quite excitable and their general well being and blood pressure has to be considered. Over loading the NHS at this crucial time would be ill-considered. :D:D:D

Dogsbody-look up the old post from Andrea! Andrea and grey-haired Hubby, well done for resurrecting your Rangie and getting seriously intimate with it before the pleasure of driving it. You took on a serious project that I don't think many would suggest, let alone recommend and have won. Ignore the cruise control for a bit and enjoy yourselves. My cruise control doesn't work, but that could be because of neither vacuum pipe being there! I don't have RAVE or a picture to show which goes where yet, so it will stay inoperative until I can be bothered, it doesn't affect the driving pleasure within the UK anyway.

It's been a hell of a project but we are chuffed with it now (although it just cost me £106 to fill it up and that was WITH a 10p off every litre voucher from Tesco!!) I dont think I'll be going too far in it until we find an LPG conversion kit. MOT'd just in time for the incoming snow I think!

As for the bikini............One day..........maybe............with me in my hot tub with a glass of bubbly :D
 
Ahhh c'mon with the 'kini dilly dallying already. Some of us are old and you can't let us pass over still wondering......;) :D

You took a chance invested about 1000 plus some time/effort and ended up with a really good posh horsebox tug, well done for taking the gamble and winning.

Now the expensive bit is keeping the hole in the back wing fed with liquid gold, until you gas it, but before you do gas it, overhaul the cooling system totally as theres always a possibility of slipped cylinder liners with gas...:eek:

And one small question, how much did you get for the Disco???

Again, well done and enjoy it.

Gentlmen Please,,, To press the young lady for such pictures is quite unbecoming of P38 drivers and a disgrace to the regiment.

What a load of tosh,,,,,, lol Well done with the motor...... now eeerm can we have you on the bonnet motor show style, and maybe bent over the engine bay,,,,,, lol lol lol

This is true, but there seems a higher risk after fitting a gas system from the overall opinions/posts here, but as I run a doozzell I can only go on others opinions.

Mind you dozzells need a good cooling system as well....:eek:
