make sure its level and cold when checking im sure you know that i have noticed with such a long sump a slight angle can throw it out by miles are you a 10/40 oil man ??

Ah, my drive is on a slope and I try and compensate by parking half on half off. So fair enough, I'll check my levels when its dead flat as whilst I knew it would matter, I didn't realise how much it would matter. Yes, 10w40 semi-synth.

Now I've decided to monitor my fuel usage I'm going to do a full tank in sports mode just to see the differance what do you lot think it will be?????I think I was getting about from brim 440 ish per tank auto, our manuel does about 480 ish ..

I tow a heavy caravan. It is about 1.7 tonnes and with all my gear it is probably 2 tonnes.
With my DSE I get about 21 - 22 mpg overall

Running the aircon makes a difference. With it on 19.5 - 20.5 mpg.

Solo I get about 26 mpg overall.

That is about 22.0 MPG overall, sport mode will depend on your foot weight. But maybe a fraz less.

Can you point me to some? Don't want to buy duff ones off ebay, Island 4x4 doesn't have them (at least nothing shows up under the P38 section). Britpart does, but others have questioned their quality.

Could you give me a pointer to a source? How many do I need? I know that'll sound really daft and I assume it's 4, but I saw something the other day that said "Number 6 injector" and something else saying "injectors: 5 required". So thought I best ask... :)

Nik

It's a 6 cylinder engine so 6 glowplugs, NOT ****part. Delphi, Beru, NGK, Bosch, any motor factors should have them or you can find them on Ebay.

Just brimmed it again. This time a week of short journeys. It hasn't seen a motorway or a horsebox and it managed 16.7mpg (computer read 18 this time). So it seems to perform better on a run, even when towing. When I was towing, the temp gauge read half. It's only ever done that towing. It never gets passed a third on a long run not towing and on short journeys it barley moves the needle :)

Most gauges sit half way on the rr from what i gather,if your is so low I do wonder if the t stat is missing or stuck open thus causing a colder running engine just a thought , but I wouldn't belive that computer work it out yourself or join fuelly

Can you take the stat out to test it in a pan of hot water without draining the coolant? I've looked in RAVE and it gives the procedure for replacing it but says nothing about dropping the coolant first.

If you can, I'll take it out and test it. If you have to drain it first or lose a lot, I'll wait until I have a replacement stat and some antifreeze.

Might as well wait nic to be honest I don't think there would be much Noticeable differance in fuel ...

Nik you are clutching at straws here. Round town stop start, up and down dale, short journeys, for an engine that has done a few miles what you have is what you've got. If you want to get the pump timing checked and the injectors serviced for possibly £300.00 then do it. That may give you a couple more miles per gallon. If you want 25 mpg plus showing on the computer most of the time move to Lincolnshire.

Tis true these are big juicy mother suckers

I've had a few defender disco freak lander they are fuel suckers mate and with the price of fuel for the average persons these are expensive beats ok for local stuff going any where distance regularly best get a car ....

and while we're on the subject of diesel economy again... don't forget winter diesel was back in pumps in the UK on or around 15th OCT...

So couple the governments anti waxing agents and higher demand for electrics (lights, fogs, wipers, heaters) don't be suprised to see your consumption rise even more.

And if anyone's interested, Shell fuelsave diesel has been working a treat for me over the past few months, av cons is now at around 29/30. Fill up at the HGV pumps to, the flow rate is much quicker to fill a 90l tank :> worst has been Texaco and Exxon (esso) fuels. And because I really like my FIP and in tank pump to keep working i've stayed well clear of the supermarkets - never had supermarket fuel since i've owned the vehicle in the last 40k miles.

So if the engine is running cold it will burn more fuel. Mine is up to normal temperature, needle just before the 12 oclock position, in around 3 kilometres.
