I am new to car mechanics and the discovery 2 and learning all the time thanks to this forum but I am wondering if I can be more proactive on my maintenance schedule. Recently I broke an axle hub and it turns out I could have spotted this months ago by wobbling the wheels when the car was jacked up.
I was wondering what kind of things go wrong the most and how can you prevent them going wrong and spot them early.

A crystal ball would be of great help!

This is what I am finding. I have never owned a car quite like this one! I'm sure it is poor servicing in the past and land rover build quality but what to do. The car is off the road less frequently then before so things are getting better.

Get a copy of RAVE, downloadable on the web.

Spend a bit of time each night reading through the sections and familiarise yourself with the vehicle.

It is a complex beast, but if you stop water ingress through the sunroof and roof bars first, that will make the electrics more reliable, then start on checking/changing oils etc etc.

Coolant MUST be 50/50 OAT, don't be tempted to use anything else.

The D2 is a pretty spanner-friendly vehicle and spares are for the most part stupidly cheap.

Many MoT testing garages will have an "Observation Area", a designated safe place where an owner can watch the inspection process. There you might learn how to check the various bits of the vehicle. When you do get the pass certificate, whether there are advisories or not, talk to the tester and ask him if he thinks there's anything that might need looking at in the next few coming months.

And as Peter says above, use RAVE to get to know your vehicle, not just the practical bits, but the theory of it too. Understanding what, how and why will help when it comes to finding out why it doesn't work.
